The 15. Cofresco Forum Round Table 2025 took place at the Sustainable Packaging Institute in Sigmaringen with Prof. Dr. Markus Schmid. Topic: Circular Food Packaging Solutions for the Household - made from recycled materials and designed for recycling. Robin Just from Polysecure GmbH was there and presented our open and efficient Sort4Circle® sorting technology in his presentation. What was particularly exciting was that the audience consisted mainly of packaging manufacturers - precisely the players who can set the course for a functioning circular economy. "Stick a Finger" Sustainability dilemna! We have noticed a trend of Eco-conscious products in ‘stick-a-finger’ packaging across several European retailers—especially in the natural beauty sections— While these formats may tick the sustainability box, they often fall short on practicality/functionality! This dileman is surely a challenge for eco conscious manufacturers, aiming to go both sustainable specifically in packaging & keeping it functional. From our in-store conversations with consumers and beauty advisors, the feedback is consistent: these formats spark initial interest for their target audience (the eco conscious consumer), they might recruit—but less consumers come back, their power to retain becomes weaker! When functionality is compromised, loyalty will suffer. For us as an eco-conscious innovation manufacturer, How do we ensure our packaging is both planet-friendly and user-friendly? In our innovation strategy, while sustainability is one of our four golden principles, functionality is a non-negotiable golden principle as well. Because a product that’s good for the planet must also work for the people who use it.
