❤️ World Heart Day 2025 ❤️ Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Australia, but breakthrough research is offering hope. A collaboration between QIMR Berghofer, Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI)’s, and the Royal Children’s Hospital has developed lab-grown ‘tiny hearts’ — human cardiac organoids that mimic real heart muscle and accelerate drug discovery. With support from Phenomics Australia’s Pipeline Accelerator, these models are helping researchers screen new therapeutics faster and more effectively, opening doors to better treatments for heart disease. Ever heard of Brain-Derived Extracellular Vesicles ? We’ve been working for more than 4 years to understand their role in Alzheimer’s disease and its progression. In collaboration with Ruiqing Ni and Luc Buee & Morvane Colin, and with the hard work of Aatmika B., Jeanne Espourteille, PhD, Valentin Zufferey and Jana Nussbaumer, we found that the synaptic proteins SV2A carried by EVs track very closely with disease progression. Why does this matter? Today, we can diagnose Alzheimer’s at advanced stages with CSF and plasma, but early biomarkers are still very limited (pTau217, GFAP, NfL). Brain-Derived Extracellular Vesicles might change that: if we can reliably isolate them in accessible fluids like saliva or urine, they could become a powerful tool to monitor the brain at much earlier stages. We are pleased to announce that CytoAgents has been awarded a $2.25 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant, the fourth NIH grant totaling $7.85 million in five years. UTA received an NIH grant to study how the body's natural defense system sometimes causes harm. Led by researcher Dr. Chowdhury, the five-year project will investigate the immune system's proteins that drive harmful inflammation, a process connected to cancer and other long-term diseases. Big news out of the lab of LJI Professor Alessandro Sette, Dr.Biol.Sci. and David Sulzer, PhD, of Columbia University Irving Medical Center: ALS appears to be an autoimmune disease. The researchers found that people with ALS produce high numbers of CD4+ T cells that target a specific protein (called C9orf72), which is expressed in neurons. Long suspected but now finally proven. Autoimmune responses DO play a role in ALS pathology and T cells contribute to the rapid loss of neurons during its progression. The identification of a protein (C9orf72) as the target of the T-cell inflammatory autoimmune response in people with ALS defines a huge move from the realm of speculation into the realm of certainty. One of the most enriching parts of working in rare diseases has been learning from collagenopathies. In our clinic, these conditions —including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)— are among the most frequent. What often starts as “just another hypermobile patient” soon requires a comprehensive approach involving rehabilitation, molecular diagnosis, and sometimes even revisiting the original diagnosis. Genomics has been a true game-changer: variants in genes such as TNXB (tenascin-X) have led us to reclassify patients, and research keeps uncovering fascinating links between collagen disorders, the immune system, and comorbidities like postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).
