🌊 Global Seaweed Coalition secures critical funding to continue its operations The Global Seaweed Coalition (GSC) is proud to announce it has secured two years of funding to continue its operations, enabling GSC to maintain its role in promoting the safe and sustainable development of the global seaweed sector. This crucial support is provided through a grant from Builders Vision, a team of investors and philanthropists accelerating promising solutions across food & agriculture, energy and oceans. The funding will support the GSC’s efforts to expand sustainable seaweed farming, build international partnerships and raise awareness of seaweed’s potential to strengthen food systems, mitigate climate change and build resilience. "This support from Builders Vision comes at a critical transition moment for the GSC," noted Dr. Philippe Potin, Senior Researcher at the French CNRS with over 35 years of seaweed expertise and GSC Scientific Director and co-founder. “The Coalition will use this funding to keep building the scientific foundation of the seaweed sector, supporting critical work in biosecurity and genetic resource management while facilitating knowledge exchanges.”      "We are proud to partner with the GSC as they work to scale sustainable seaweed farming globally, a transformative effort that aims to restore ocean ecosystems, produce nutritious food and create innovative opportunities to grow the blue economy," said Laura F. Investing in sustainable farming methods isn't just good business—it's a reflection of our purpose. 📖 Biblical perspective: For small-scale farmers, regenerative practices like agroforestry, crop diversification, and conservation agriculture are game-changers for boosting food security and income. From a Biblical perspective, we are called to be faithful stewards of creation ([Genesis 2:15]), tending to the land to ensure its health for future generations. These sustainable methods embody that principle by enriching the soil and working in harmony with nature's design. 🧭 MAP4LIFE perspective: This aligns perfectly with the MAP4LIFE framework, emphasizing that long-term success is rooted in purpose-driven action. It's about achieving economic viability while building resilient, thriving communities. By doing so, we don't just grow food; we cultivate a better world for ourselves and those who come after us. 💡 An excellent real-world example of how sustainable farming has increased food security and income for small-scale farmers is found in Malawi and other Southern African countries, where the use of agroforestry has revitalized land and communities.  The practice: Fertilizer trees - In these projects, small-scale farmers planted specific tree species like Gliricidia within their maize fields. These trees are known as "fertilizer trees" because they fix nitrogen in the soil through their roots and provide nutrient-rich leaves when pruned. The trees' shade also helps the soil retain moisture, which is critical in a climate with erratic rainfall and increasing temperatures.  The results One documented case study highlights a farmer in Malawi who saw dramatic results:  Massive yield increase: Previously, he harvested one small ear of maize per plant. Funded by the Marine Farming Association, New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science Limited worked with Extrutec Ltd, the University of Auckland and Waimana Marine to trial 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 as a more sustainable alternative to other types of lashing. Over 700 biodegradable rope ties were deployed on mussel farms in the Marlborough region, with researchers carefully monitoring performance and decomposition. The results? None of the ties failed during normal farming — showing in some circumstances we can cut down on other lashing types without compromising farm productivity. This research offers mussel farmers a practical way to reduce their environmental footprint while continuing to deliver one of Aotearoa’s most iconic seafoods. Grazing is not the problem—it can be the solution. Livestock can be healers of the land—if we let them. Industrial farming has trapped animals in systems that erode soils, destroy biodiversity, and push our planet beyond its limits. But when animals graze in sync with ecosystems, they become agents of renewal. “Grazing is blessing.” Moving with plant growth, livestock can restore soil fertility, bring back pollinators, enrich water cycles, and breathe life into depleted landscapes. This is the wisdom pastoralist communities have practiced for centuries, showing that harmony between animals and vegetation is not only possible but essential. The alternative—factory farming and feedlots tied to endless monocultures—only deepens the crisis. Greenpeace is right to call for a shift toward agroecological practices. Worth a read. "Unchecked warming could slash aquaculture growth to just 8% by 2050, and in worst-case scenarios, 25% of aquaculture-producing nations could lose 40-90% of their farming capacity by mid-century due to warming waters and feed supply shocks". 

Last week, I had an incredible opportunity to travel through Mato Grosso, Brazil visiting farmers enrolled in Syngenta Group’s Reverte program. Reverte, built in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Banco Itaú incentivizes the restoration of degraded pastureland to agricultural land for crops. In theory, this could protect remaining in-tact ecosystems by triggering the land-sparing effect. The theory of change goes something like this: ➡️ Restore degraded pasture, which has already been cleared of native vegetation, but is producing suboptimal (or no) yields. ➡️ Boost productivity within the existing agricultural footprint to reduce the pressure for further expansion of farmland. ➡️ Keep native vegetation (including savannah, forest, and wetlands) intact. I’m still digesting a week’s worth of conversations (and 27 pages of notes). I could probably build an entire course from all that I learned. I’ll have a lot more to share soon, including: 🔹What would motivate an agrochemical company to invest in this work. 🔹Why the way we talk about Brazilian farmers in sustainability often feels detached from reality, and frankly, patronizing. 🔹Why I believe state regulation and enforcement continue to be the most critical tool for land protection and restoration. For now, here’s a video of some cows and cowboys. The cattle are tightly grouped here because the cowboys wrangled them for us, but in reality, they have huge pastures to roam.
