A new article in Science Magazine highlights newly published research and the growing debate about prophylactic use of azithromycin in Africa, which has the potential to save vulnerable children’s lives, but could accelerate antibiotic resistance. CARB-X Executive Director Kevin Outterson and other experts emphasized the moral dilemma of widespread azithromycin use in Africa. University of Ibadan microbiologist Iruka Okeke said, “If you lose an antimicrobial in the U.S. or Western Europe, you’ve lost something that’s valuable.
