My first job out of college, I was a financial analyst. I left that job to manage a reggae rock band. Then, I worked on a documentary about gold mines in Utah. Then, I worked in residential real estate development. (I now have been running a successful textile company for over 20 years, but needless to say, it took me a while to find my “forever job.”) During this period, many of my friends and family told me, “You need to pick one thing and stick to it.” They worried I’d become a “Jack of all trades and a master of none.” Now, though, as an entrepreneur and CEO, I wouldn’t change a thing about my past. I think having a diverse range of experiences is invaluable. Just consider the lessons I learned… - My skills as a financial analyst have translated into how best to deliver financials to the Board of Managers - The documentary taught me how to find motivation in the face of rejection - My job as a reggae rock band manager taught me how to handle fluid, stressful and high-pressure situations while collaborating with distinct and varied personalities - Working in residential real estate taught me why the saying “every project takes twice the cost and twice the time” exists. 😊 I could go on and on. So, my word of advice, for anyone still “figuring it out” – don’t worry. While you may not be in your “dream job” right now, you’re building a unique bank of experiences that you can draw on for the rest of your life. You’re right where you need to be.

🤦♀️ Frustrated but not surprised… Last week, I discovered that a third-party recruiter had posted a fraudulent job ad mimicking our real opening for a Finance Manager (CFO) at Rainbow Municipal Water District (real brochure is attached). While they didn’t name our agency, they plagiarized enough of our job description to make it seem like they were recruiting for us. When I confronted them, they admitted it was a mistake and promised to remove the post. Thankfully, it’s now down—but I’m still upset, and here’s why: 1️⃣ It misleads job seekers into applying for a role that’s not connected to us. 2️⃣ It potentially puts candidates’ personal information at risk. 3️⃣ It undermines trust in legitimate job opportunities. Job seekers, you deserve better than this. The market is already challenging enough without scams and unethical practices, making it harder to navigate.
