This #TuesdaysTimelessTales, we're diving into the history of submarine innovation! 🌊 After the loss of USS Thresher (SSN-593) in 1963, engineers at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, pioneered new pressure hulls and buoyancy systems for deep submergence vessels. Through groundbreaking research and testing in specialized tanks, Carderock’s teams developed improved design procedures and explored new high-strength steels and other materials. This work directly contributed to iconic vessels like the DSRV, ensuring the Navy's submarine fleet remained structurally sound and safe. ⚓ Caption: Improvements to the DSRV-1. The Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle served as a test bed for dozens of innovative concepts developed by different groups, including new high-strength steel alloys. #underpressure #NAVSEA #innovation #accelerate #forcegeneration #deep #submergence

The Detroit News reports on the mounting lack of space at confined disposal facilities - run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - and what it means for the Detroit and Rouge rivers' contaminated sediment dredging. Ashley Flintoff, executive director of Friends of the Rouge, said, “We’ve all been working so hard to try and get funding in place to get the projects done. What do we do if there’s no place to put the sediment? We can’t just leave it.” https://lnkd.in/gkJyFat2

The US Navy Maritime Industrial Base Program is to accelerate the integration of additive manufacturing into the construction of nuclear-powered submarines. Through the programme, General Dynamics Electric Boat will source critical components from Lincoln Electric's large-scale metal additive manufacturing capability. The US Navy MIB Program is tapping into this capability as it aims to deliver one Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine and two Virginia-class attack submarines each year by 2028. ⚡ How to Prevent Corrosion⚡ Did you know the USS Independence started corroding just two years after launch—not from battle damage, but from dissimilar metals reacting against each other? The same issue contributed to the Statue of Liberty’s 1980s restoration and even the Santa Barbara Oil Spill. So what causes it? 👉 Dissimilar metals, like aluminum + stainless steel, create a galvanic couple when joined together. When this galvanic couple is introduced to an electrolyte corrosion begins—weakening structures in ships, aircraft, and equipment. How to prevent it: ✔ Use Av-DEC materials to seal out the electrolyte and stop corrosion before it starts. Learn more about how Av-DEC helps protect your assets: https://www.avdec.com/ #CorrosionPrevention #Aerospace #Navy #Engineering #AvDEC
