Today, we pause to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001 — including our US Navy shipmates who perished at the Pentagon and those who gave their lives in the days that followed. In the wake of that tragic day, the United States Navy surged forward — from the first Tomahawk launches off our ships and submarines, to two decades of persistent maritime operations that helped safeguard our Nation. Sailors stood the watch in every theater, from sea to shore, often in harm’s way, determined to prevent future attacks and uphold the ideals of freedom. To the families who lost loved ones, and to every Sailor who has served in the Global War on Terror — your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Your courage is etched into the steel of our ships, the hearts of your shipmates, and the soul of our Navy. We remember. We honor. We continue the watch. Adm. Daryl Caudle, CNO
