Guten Tag from Washington, D.C. where the International Monetary Fund and The World Bank meetings are wrapping up. It’s also a great opportunity to meet with clients and stakeholders who are here. Earlier today I spoke to Bloomberg Television’s Lisa Abramowicz about the economic environment. As you can imagine, there was lots to talk about – such as the strong interest in Europe, especially Germany. Some thoughts on that, based on my conversations here: ▪️ I’ve had many discussions here about the opportunities in Germany for companies and investors. But locking that investment in will depend on the German government following through on the structural reforms it has pledged and combining that with fiscal stimulus to support competitiveness and growth. ▪️ Banks will play a vital role in bringing that investment to Europe – especially those with global networks and local know-how such as Deutsche Bank. But the trajectory of regulation will be decisive for the banks to deliver that. ▪️ We should not be adding complexity to existing requirements, but simplifying them where possible. And doing so without compromising stability and security. This is the only way to create scope for more growth and investment in Europe. ▪️ No less important is the need to look at capital requirements from a global perspective. It cannot be that Europe seeks to increase the burden while other markets, from the US to the UK, go in the other direction. We need a level playing field. ▪️ Finally, we need now to see work to unify Europe’s capital markets pick up pace. It’s reassuring to hear European policymakers here in Washington address many of these topics. However, we still need stronger resolve to initiate tangible changes and the courage to follow a clear growth agenda and to hold course. The IMF and World Bank meetings give us all the chance to step back, take a wide view of the economy and assess the opportunities and challenges it brings. Our clients’ insights here are invaluable, and we remain ready to help them navigate whatever comes their way. You can find the link to the full interview in the comments.
I think, ( Know ) it's a dangerous thing when you try to combine all the money into one currency unit. One currency unit does not fit All nations. Where is the incentive for growth and exchange? Regroup, try again, and come up with a more operative plan,,,,,,
Inspiring to see the focus on policy, investment, and global growth. Your work at the IMF and World Bank highlights how clear action, collaboration, and bold leadership can unlock opportunities and strengthen the global economy.
Nice to see you on this side of the pond Mr Sewing.
Strong insights from Washington, D.C. – structural reforms, simpler regulation, and deeper capital markets are key for Europe’s competitiveness. Germany must act now to turn potential into real growth.
