Green Aluminum Smelter secures $10 million in Phase 1 funding The US’ first primary #aluminium smelter in 45 years has received $10 million in #USA government funding. The Green Aluminum Smelter project, led by Century Aluminum, secured the funding from the US Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) to begin Phase 1 activities. The location of the Green Aluminum Smelter project will be determined during Phase 1. Upon completion, the #smelter would double the size of the current US primary aluminium #industry while avoiding an estimated 75% of #emissions from a traditional smelter due to its #energyefficient design. The high-purity aluminium produced from the facility is suitable for national defence, #electric vehicles, semiconductors, building and #construction, and clean #energy applications. During Phase 1, Century Aluminum will determine and announce the site, complete initial engineering studies for various aspects of the project, provide documentation and reports necessary to complete the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review, and engage community and #labour stakeholders. #aluminum #green #climateaction

“‘We just need a crumb or two, just a little giant smelter,’ Holbrook said with a laugh when we met at his office near Ashland’s historic main street. A short walk away, stones used in the city’s original iron-making furnaces stand as monuments overlooking the Ohio River. Today, Holbrook heads the Tri-State Building and Construction Trades Council, which represents unions in a cluster of adjoining counties in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. He’s part of a broad coalition of labor organizers, local officials, environmentalists, and clean energy advocates who are urging Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, to work with Century to secure the smelter and hammer out a long-term deal to provide clean energy for it. ‘It’d be a godsend for that area,’ said Chad Mills, a pipefitter and the director of the Kentucky State Building and Construction Trades Council. The region ‘needs it more than you can imagine.’ The impact of Century’s new smelter would ripple far beyond this rural stretch of verdant peaks and meandering creeks. The planned facility is set to nearly double the amount of primary aluminum that the United States produces — helping to revitalize a domestic industry that has been steadily shrinking for decades owing to spiking power prices and increased competition from China. In 2000, U.S. companies operated 23 aluminum smelters. Today, only four plants are operating, while another two have been indefinitely curtailed. Century Aluminum aims to roughly double the U.S. output of aluminum from smelters by building the country’s first new smelter in 45 years. The company’s biggest challenge is securing an affordable power supply. In manufacturing, few things are as power-intensive as turning powdery aluminum oxide into metal. Producing a ton of aluminum typically uses more electricity than a single household consumes in an entire year. Century expects its planned smelter to produce about 1,500 metric tons of aluminum a day. “This is going to be a test case for America’s reindustrialization,” said Joe Quinn, executive director for the Center for Strategic Industrial Materials. Century is counting on the aggressive build-out of solar- and wind-powered generating capacity now under way to start yielding excess power after 2030, and the company hopes to lock down supply in exchange for a decade’s worth of steady electricity demand from a new smelter.

Consumers Energy is the largest investor-owned Utility (by land mass) in Michigan, a state where improving reliability in the energy sector has been a major priority for stakeholders. Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) tasked Consumers Energy with reducing the number and length of outages just as they were experiencing difficulties sourcing wood poles to fill their needs. Ductile iron turned out to be the solution to both problems. Consumers discovered that all other pole options, aside from heavy weathering steel, would require continuous repairs and maintenance. Ductile iron, however, is highly resistant to wind, storms, and heat from wildfires, as well as completely resistant to rot, insects, freezing weather, and woodpeckers, and maintenance is minimal to none. McWane Poles helped Consumers Energy through every stage of implementation, from tooling suggestions and requirements to writing a specification to nuanced standards changes. McWane’s production flexibility also helped ensure a smooth rollout. Consumers is expecting a 200 to 300% reduction in truck rolls over the lifespan of a new ductile iron pole; in addition to a 80-100 year life expectancy. 𝗘𝗔𝗙 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝗦 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹: 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 by Alesha Alkaff; Fastmarkets The #transition from blast furnace (#BF) steel #production to electric-arc furnaces (#EAF) provides a clear path to achieving zero-emissions #steel, with #producers considering hitting #sustainability #targets and lower #costs, Wade Wright, a steel #consultant told #participants at a #greensteel webinar held by Jefferies Equity Research on Monday August 12. Every steel #producer is looking at their #production environment and identifying ways to improve their #carbonfootprint, Wright said, noting a focus from both #integratedmills and #minimills on incremental changes to production #processes. BF mills, or integrated producers, such as Cleveland-Cliffs and United States Steel Corporation utilize #hydrogen to reduce emissions. Cleveland-Cliffs announced in March it will replace its BF in #MiddletownWorks, Ohio, with a hydrogen-ready direct-reduced iron (#DRI) plant and two electric-melting furnaces. US Steel, in #partnership with Molten Industries and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will pilot a new process that produces hydrogen for reducing #ironore, resulting in #carbonneutral steel production. Integrated producers achieve an estimated 10-15% reduction in their carbon footprint by using #hydrogen in their #steelmaking process, but it results in a costly form of production, Wright said during the #webinar. On the other hand, #EAF mills, or mini-mills, could garner a 10-20% reduction in their carbon footprint, Wright added. Due to the comparatively cleaner method of production, #minimills such as Nucor Corporation and Steel Dynamics, Inc, have a carbon footprint advantage and are starting at a much lower level of carbon emissions compared with integrated mills, the consultant said.
