Australian Energy Producers conference kicked off in Perth, West Australia. Powering the Energy Transition is the theme. The Honourable Reece Whitby challenged the industry to walk the talk wrt decarbonisation. The Minister and all the other speakers acknowledged the importance of gas for the transition especially as coal fired power generation is shutdown, reinforcing that many of our trading partners continue to require gas supply from Australia to help power their economies as they transition. The Minister used the colourful example of Kodak, to pose the question: will you (ie your business) cease to exist? It was a reasonable challenge to ask AEP members will your business be part of the future energy solution (or not). From a H2EX Ltd perspective, the Minister gave the natural hydrogen sector a quick plug, given a recent amendment to the energy legislation in WA, now allowing for the exploration and production of natural hydrogen.

Woodside Energy’s acquisition of an ammonia project in Texas, USA, is a welcome departure from deploying shareholder capital to long-duration, low-margin and high-emissions oil and gas projects. But this “new energy” investment won’t reduce Woodside’s oil and gas emissions. Woodside’s “new energy” portfolio is not designed to reduce Woodside’s emissions. Investing in an ammonia project forecast to abate 3.2 MtCO2e p.a., at the same time as investing in Driftwood, which could cause 68 MtCO2e p.a. of scope 3 emissions, reflects the imbalanced scales of Woodside’s strategy. This is a fundamental problem with Woodside’s existing climate transition plan.

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a $1.2 billion investment to develop the nation's first direct air capture (DAC) hubs in Texas and Louisiana. These facilities aim to remove over 2 million metric tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to the emissions from approximately 445,000 gasoline-powered cars. With the recent finalization of EPA's Clean Air Act 111 GHG rules for new combustion turbine facilities and existing fossil fuel fired EGU's, there is a growing need for more infrastructure development of permanent CO2 storage and full scale development and implementation of carbon capture systems. One new project that is underway is the CenterPoint and Energy Transfer partnership. It will take many such efforts to build a viable and sustainable infrastructure.
