Abu Dhabi pioneers AI-powered MRI for faster multiple sclerosis diagnosis Abu Dhabi is breaking new ground in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). In a landmark collaboration, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), Yas Clinic–Khalifa City, and the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) have introduced an AI-powered MRI technique that promises earlier, more accurate detection of MS. “This is a perfect example of the ‘bench-to-bedside’ journey,” said Professor Dr Osama Elnour Abdallah, MRI Physicist at NYUAD’s Center for Brain and Health. “Our work focuses on pushing the boundaries of what MRI can reveal. Salah Assana is at the whole body dual MRI-PET scanner at Harvard University’s Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, working with Dr. Michael VanElzakker and Dr. David Izquierdo-Garcia on a study of long COVID patients with persistent breathing difficulties. This PolyBio-supported study uses specialized imaging to detect fibrin accumulation that standard clinical imaging cannot see. The participant is briefly holding their breath in the scanner so their lungs can be clearly imaged. The study is recruiting long COVID patients who have had pulmonary function tests (PFT) and a chest CT scan that could not explain their pulmonary issues. Collaboration and AI to solve a clinical challenge in ophthalmology Conjunctival hyperemia is a common finding in clinical practice and clinical trials, yet its grading remains subjective and variable, even among experienced clinicians. This variability can limit consistency in patient care and the comparability of study results. In our recent publication in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (Ann NY Acad Sci. 2025;1551:201–209 DOI: 10.1111/nyas.70009), led by Damon Wong and Leopold Schmetterer, we report the results of a multicenter, collaborative effort to address this problem. Using a semi-supervised artificial intelligence approach, we developed models capable of segmenting conjunctival vessels and quantifying vessel density from slit-lamp images. Key outcomes: AI-derived vessel density showed strong correlation with clinical Efron grading (0.83 in test set; 0.80 in external dataset). Semi-supervised learning improved performance compared to conventional supervised models, leveraging both labeled and unlabeled data. The approach demonstrated robustness across datasets from different sites. This work illustrates how AI can provide objective, reproducible, and scalable tools to complement clinical expertise, enhancing both patient care and research quality. It was a privilege to contribute to this international collaboration, bringing together expertise from Singapore, Romania, Austria, France, China, and Spain. 🚨 Research Publication Announcement 🚨 I am delighted to share that our paper titled: “Deep Learning based early detection of Hematoma Expansion from Non-Contrast CT scan of Brain in Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke” has been officially published in the 2025 International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Sustainable Healthcare (ICBMESH 2025), IEEE Xplore. 🧠 This work presents a deep learning-based approach using ResNet-18 for early detection of hematoma expansion in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients from non-contrast CT scans.
