Dear CO₂ Value Europe Members and Followers, The October edition of our newsletter arrives just days after our annual event, the CO₂ Value Europe Days, co-hosted by two of our members: TNO and Fluor Corporation, in Rijswijk, the Netherlands. Bringing together over 120 leading voices in the Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) community, the two days were filled with impactful exchanges on project progress, strategic discussions on scaling-up and making CCU bankable, policy developments at national and EU level, and opportunities for community building. The transition from summer to autumn has been an exceptionally busy period for our policy work. Our team met with several European Commission officials to advocate for increased CCU involvement in the Commission’s modelling and policy instruments. With the Commission’s new policy agenda around the Clean Industrial Deal, an unprecedented wave of consultations emerged, outlining measures to support the green transition and highlighting CCU’s growing importance in future legislation. Our policy team responded to 10 consultations related to CCU technologies and is currently preparing a contribution to the upcoming Circular Economy Act. On the scientific front, CO₂ Value Europe contributed expertise to a new World Economic Forum paper on CCU. The paper addresses CCU definitions, technical approaches, and policy considerations, emphasising its potential to drive sustainable industry, open new markets, and reduce emissions—provided it receives strong public support. Adding to the momentum, The Nobel Prize 2025 in Chemistry was awarded to the creators of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), innovative molecular structures that can also be applied to carbon capture, thus opening major scientific and industrial opportunities in the near future. Finally, we are glad to welcome five new members: Green Gas & Liquids, Universite de Lorraine, TTP plc, and Bosch Transmission Technology B.V.. Empa consortium awarded funding to reduce hard-to-abate #CO2 emissions 👏 The ACHIEVE consortium is a six-year effort that unites 14 partners from science, business and policy. Together, members will test cutting-edge carbon capture, storage and utilization, explore circular economy approaches, and even pilot CO2 injection deep underground. ACHIEVE aims to unlock real, scalable climate solutions and chart Switzerland’s path to #netzero. The consortium is led by Empa as host institution; its partners are ETH Zürich, PSI Paul Scherrer Institut and Eidg. We are very excited to be part of the recently-funded ACHIEVE consortium to continue our work for the next phase of the CITru #CCS injection pilot here in Switzerland. Storra (legally Storra Dynamics GmbH) will be continuing and deepening our work on the measurement monitoring and verification (#MMV) plan and risk assessment. With Jeremy Jebamoney leading the way, Australian Carbon Vault is making strong progress in advancing carbon removal and storage initiatives. The broader CCUS, CCS, and CDR industries are gaining momentum across all fronts as global efforts to scale up climate solutions continue to accelerate.

🤝 Last week at #SDIM25, we hosted a high-level session on carbon capture and utilization (#CCU), spotlighting the innovators, industry leaders, and policymakers pushing the boundaries of carbon technologies. Today’s global CCU capacity is ~4M tonnes/hour. Scaling that requires bold #collaboration. Our attendees agreed that achieving this requires several key actions: 🏛️ Ensure policy certainty: Speakers emphasized that 'legislation is a powerful tool that can make or collapse a market'. ✅ Make green solutions competitive: Creating pathways for green solutions may require carbon taxes and addressing fossil subsidies. 🏭 Enable cross-sector collaboration: As one speaker pointed out: 'There is no single technology that can fix this', highlighting how CCU is part of a broader suite of solutions. 🌍 Acknowledge different regions face different challenges: Europe’s unlocked capital and North America’s lack of coordination were highlighted, while it was suggested that China’s financing model might hold valuable lessons for the rest of the world. Building a Circular Carbon Economy – Across Borders 🔄🌍    Last week, our colleague Georg Weig had the pleasure of representing Chemie-Cluster Bayern GmbH and our joint project “CCU in Bayern” with C.A.R.M.E.N. e.V. at the 9th CO₂ Value Europe Days in Rijswijk, The Netherlands. 🇳🇱    Many thanks to CO2 Value Europe, TNO, and Fluor Corporation for hosting this insightful and energizing event!    💬 One key takeaway: Achieving climate neutrality in industry requires cross-border collaboration – across regions, sectors, and value chains. 💪   This is exactly the mission of our project "CCU in Bayern": developing regional solutions while engaging in the European dialogue, through pioneering networks like CO2 Value Europe and the Renewable Carbon Initiative.
