SELinux on Embedded Linux — practical must-have or overkill? Curious to hear real-world experiences from teams shipping embedded Linux devices (routers, gateways, IVI/ADAS, industrial, consumer IoT). Many stacks already do “secure by design”: verified/secure boot, signed OTA, read-only rootfs, minimal services, iptables. Where has SELinux (or other LSMs like AppArmor/SMACK) made a clear, measurable difference for you? Would love specifics: Wins vs. effort: Any “MAC containment saved us” stories? Overheads: boot time, RAM/flash footprint, build time. Policy ops: permissive → enforcing workflows, any kernel logs denoting permissive access which should have been blocked?. Filesystems: labeling gotchas with overlayfs, squashfs, ext4/F2FS. Alternatives: When did AppArmor or just seccomp/caps prove sufficient? Please share device class, FS stack, and any metrics you can. Let’s collect some grounded guidance for the community. 🙏 #EmbeddedLinux #SELinux #AppArmor #IoT #LinuxSecurity #Yocto #Cybersecurity #EdgeComputing #DevSecOps

💡 The Heart of Linux: The Kernel When we say “Linux,” we’re often referring to a vast ecosystem — distributions, tools, and applications. But at its core lies something truly fascinating: the Linux Kernel — the heartbeat that connects hardware to software. 🧠 What makes it special? It’s monolithic, yet modular — allowing dynamic loading of drivers and components. It’s open source, built collaboratively by thousands of developers across the world. It powers everything from supercomputers and servers to Android phones and IoT devices. It’s constantly evolving — with each release improving performance, hardware support, and security. 🐧 For engineers, diving into kernel development teaches you more than just coding: It teaches discipline, precision, and a deep respect for the low-level mechanics that make modern systems run. ✨ Whether you’re exploring device drivers, schedulers, memory management, or system calls, remember — every contribution, no matter how small, powers billions of devices worldwide. #Linux #Kernel #OpenSource #OperatingSystems #CProgramming #SystemsEngineering

Ever seen a tiny Linux system boot in seconds — with barely a few megabytes of storage — and still handle commands like ls, cat, ifconfig, or even vi? That’s probably BusyBox doing its magic Think of BusyBox as the Swiss Army knife of Linux utilities — it combines hundreds of common Unix tools into a single compact binary. So instead of separate executables for cp, mv, rm, grep, etc., BusyBox includes lightweight versions of all of them under one roof. 🐧 Ultra-lightweight — perfect for embedded systems, routers, and IoT devices. 🐧 Modular — you can build only the commands you need. 🐧 Rootfs-friendly — makes initramfs and minimal containers easier to build. 🐧 Same interface, smaller footprint — ideal for devices with <16 MB flash. It’s the reason your Wi-Fi router, set-top box, or even a rescue Linux image can run commands without needing full GNU coreutils. Next time you see /bin/busybox on a system, try running: busybox --list You’ll be surprised how much Linux fits inside that one binary.

🚀 The Renaissance of a Classic: Microsoft's OS that Grows 100% in Two Months In the world of operating systems, where Windows 11 and Linux dominate the conversations, a 16-year-old Microsoft veteran is experiencing an impressive surge. We're talking about Windows Embedded Compact, an OS designed for embedded devices that has seen its usage double in just two months, according to recent data from Steam Hardware Survey and other adoption metrics. 📊 Explosive Growth This OS, originally oriented towards industrial and IoT environments, has gone from a marginal market share to a 100% increase in adoption. Key factors include: • 🔄 Compatibility updates that make it viable for modern hardware. • 🛠️ Integration with edge computing and automation ecosystems. • 🌐 Demand in sectors like manufacturing and retail, where stability is paramount. 🔍 Why It Matters Now Unlike general OS like Windows 11 or Linux, this system stands out for its efficiency in limited resources. Its resurgence reflects a trend towards legacy solutions optimized for the AI and 5G era, attracting developers seeking performance without unnecessary complexities. This phenomenon underscores how innovation doesn't always come from the new, but from revitalizing the proven. Are you exploring embedded OS in your projects?
