It's no wonder some job postings go unfilled for a long time. Not only do they require experience in everything, they're looking for it in someone with just a few years of experience so they don't have to pay market price for more senior staff. My advice--never pass an opportunity to apply where your background is remotely close (the ones getting hired are exclusively from those who apply), make interviews as much about getting information as giving it to be able to draw your own professional conclusions, and be prepared to go through the process many times before you find the right fit.

This post perfectly highlights unrealistic job expectations in cybersecurity.

Mastering even one tool takes real time — months, sometimes years. Each tool has its own purpose, its own learning curve. Yet job descriptions today read like grocery lists — expecting one person with 3–8 years of experience to know everything under the sun. If someone actually did all that, they’d have no personal or family life left… just trading all their time and energy for a tiny berry from an entire forest of tools.

You mean I did all that study and practice to run my own department by myself? 🤔 🤣 🤣 Facts! There are a lot of these types of job reqs out there.

Recruiters really need to understand the scope of each cybersecurity domain.

I’ve practiced with almost everything on that list and wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of others have too. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone has all of that on their resume + more & could explain it in perfect detail. I feel like we all have thousands of different specialties we bring to the table, it’s all about getting to it. Not everything is on a resume, for example, and you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Is this the cybersecurity equivalent of asking someone to go to the shop for tartan paint, a long weight, and a left-handed screwdriver? 😅
