The FDA recently approved updated Covid-19 vaccines for the fall, but with new restrictions that limit eligibility mostly to older adults and those with underlying health conditions. As part of the approval, the agency also called for a study on something it referred to as "post-vaccination syndrome." Stanford Medicine’s Dr. Jake Scott, an infectious diseases specialist, says the concept is not well-defined and may risk misleading patients and clinicians alike. The fall COVID vaccines received FDA approval recently, but had significant changes to who can get them. These changes mean that the COVID-19 vaccines may be harder to access this year than in the past. But their importance has not changed, nor has the science that supports their effectiveness. If you have the ability, you should discuss access with your clinician, and remember that tools like masking and ventilation can also help reduce your risk of infection. On the occasion of the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, FIP has joined the International Federation on Ageing, the Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform, the International Longevity Centre - UK and the IFPMA International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations in issuing a joint statement: https://lnkd.in/dpPFUYyE. Together, we are calling for urgent action to strengthen life-course immunisation and integrated care for people living with multiple chronic conditions. By supporting prevention, expanding access to vaccination, and enabling health systems to address multimorbidity more effectively, governments can reduce inequalities and strengthen resilience. This joint statement highlights the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals, patient organisations and industry to advance universal health coverage and to promote healthier ageing.

#Immunisation is a powerful but underused tool in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (#AMR). By preventing infections in the first place, vaccines reduce the need for antibiotics and the risk of resistant strains spreading. 📌 #Flu, #RSV, #COVID19 or #pneumococcal disease immunisation helps avoid misdiagnoses and unnecessary antibiotic use. 📌 #Flu immunisation can reduce antibiotic use by 11–50% 📌 #Pneumococcal immunisation lowers pathogen carriage, reduces antibiotic prescriptions, and limits the circulation of resistant strains Despite this, immunisation remains underfunded across the EU with an allocation of just 0.5% of healthcare budgets. For example, community acquired pneumococcal pneumonia has an estimated annual cost of €10 billion in Europe, which can be heavily reduced through immunisation. 📅 Be part of the conversation on 15 October at the European Parliament or online to call for a new EU Council Recommendation on respiratory infections. 🔗 http://bit.ly/4m5fwaJ #EURespiDay #EUFluDay #VaccinesWork #Vaccination #PreventInfection #PublicHealth #AMR #HealthcareInnovation #RespiratoryHealth #AIB #AdultImmunizationBoard #HealthPolicy #EUHealthcare #ImmunisationAwareness

We welcome the continuation of the RSV vaccine for infants through 2026; a critical protection for our youngest and most vulnerable. 👶💉 We now need expansion of key vaccines, including RSV and the enhanced flu vaccine, for older adults and those with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma. Viral infections are one of the most common triggers of asthma flare-ups. Expanding vaccine access isn’t just good policy, it’s a proven, preventive investment that reduces emergency visits, hospitalisations, and long-term healthcare costs. Protecting people with asthma means preventing illness before it starts. 💙 Read our Pre-Budget Submission here: https://lnkd.in/e7-dDiBv

Vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) reduce the risk of infection in older adults and infants, a new Cochrane review has found. Researchers from Evidence Synthesis Ireland and Cochrane Ireland (University of Galway), and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) analyzed 14 clinical trials involving more than 100,000 participants. The findings show strong evidence that RSV vaccines can protect the most vulnerable – infants and older adults – helping reduce hospitalizations and pressure on health systems.
