Exploring AI and circularity in supply chains at DPW Amsterdam

Supply Chain Technology | Circularity

Backstage in the green room at DPW Amsterdam about to head up and explore: “Can AI ever be circular?” First we’ll unpack AI, in context of supply chains. We’ll explore a self-driving supply chains and the building blocks of math, physi-digi, probabilistic operations and more. AI is in the cloud, and the cloud is a physical place. So… Then, we will look at circularity. Of the 100 billion tons of materials that enter the global economy each year, it all comes through us in supply chain and procurement. I’ll share innovators that help showcase the physical elements: build, power, cool, and maintain. How are you considering the reasonable use of AI? #supplychain #AI #procurement #innovation

Love that you’re in Amsterdam, I’ll actually be there later today! As for reasonable use of AI, I’m working develop better matching of supply and demand in complicated supply chains such as packaging. The question of how to find the right used box, at the right place, at the right price, at the right time, in the right frequency, and at the right spec — well is complicated. I employ a number of home grown programs and personnel to crack that nut everyday, and having AI be able to take those large datasets and interpret them into actionable insights will break this market wide open and make used gaylords and boxes in the B2B space much more mainstream.

Wishing I could be there — this is such an important discussion. Deborah Dull has an incredible way of demystifying how AI and ML truly work in context, especially when it comes to supply chain transformation. From a circular logistics standpoint, my AI wish list starts with intelligent grading — arguably one of the toughest challenges in reverse. Imagine pairing that with a digital product passport that helps the next owner of a product translate grading standards across borders. Because “good, better, best” means something very different depending on where in the world a product lands. Aligning those perceptions through AI could unlock global consistency, trust, and value recovery — turning data into the universal language of circular commerce.

At this point I’d settle for AI producing more value than it consumes.
