If you facilitate innovation workshops like #designthinking or #designsprints, you might find this video interesting👇 (should I make a professional version??)
Anyone familiar with the Design Sprint knows how daunting it can feel for people to 𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 for the first time. Two years ago I made this (very low-fi) video to show my client how quick and easy it can be to make training material to help their teams apply innovation methods.
It was never meant to be viewed more than a few times as an example for my client. But, today I chatted with the same client (innovation manager in a large industrial company) and I found out that 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 this simple video is still being used in their corporate Design Thinking training (which I helped create), it's still a 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 for their internal training team, and has been viewed by well over 1000 people in the company 😱😂🫣.
I made the video in 2 hours, at home, on my phone (without fancy lighting, microphone, or editing... obviously). So today I decided I should share this as an example of 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭.
Please feel free to use my video, or even better, record your own video with YOUR face as the expert facilitator!
𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨, 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 👍 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭. 500 likes = I WILL MAKE a high-quality YouTube video!
I'm not just fishing for likes (maybe only a bit). I truly want to find out if videos like this are useful for others. So please only "like" if you might use a video like this for your work 🙏

Hi creating your own concept sketch. Your own sketch of an idea that you want to present to others can be really scary and daunting, especially if you feel like you can't draw. So this video is going to give you some really quick tips to try and make that feel a bit less scary. And I'm going to show you literally how to start a sketch using really basic methods. The most important thing to remember is that you can create. Where is sketch of your idea or concept using mostly rectangles. So if you can draw a rectangle or a square, you're already 80% of the way there. But it can also be hard to figure out exactly where to start, how to get the ideas on the page in the right order. So we're going to have a look at exactly how to do that. So you probably have started with some kind of inspiration or looking at how other other things are made other. Companies, other apps, other products, how they do things. If you've had some inspiration from outside things, that's exactly the right place to start by looking at those things. So in this example that I'm going to show you, we're working on a travel service, coming up with ideas specifically for how families and groups can plan trips together, including the destination ideas, different suggestions that people have, how do they decide things together so. We've had a bit of inspiration from other things, and the ones that really stood out to me that I'm going to base my concept sketch on and I'm not gonna copy what they do, but I'm really gonna look at what they do and then translate that into my own ideas and decide how to put those on the page. The things that really stood out to me that I want to base my sketch on was the idea of using Pinterest style images. So lots of graphics and images so people can really we can share ideas. Using photos and images rather than just talking about them. There another one that thing that really stood out to me was how Airbnb has this favouriting heart feature so that people you can say which things are your favourites and I wanna use that to show how in families and groups people can favor it and vote on things and using some kind of similar function. And lastly I Pinterest also has the ability for you to comment or chat about certain things so I'd like to steal that. Idea and use the ability to to chat about a particular destination or option with just adding a simple chat feature as well. So I've got all these different things and I can see how Pinterest has done this and I can see how Airbnb has done this and I'm going to use that to help me sketch out my own version of the idea for our travel solution that we're trying to to come up with ideas for. So let's get on to the paper. So first of all I've quickly. Cops on post it notes. That's how I that's helps me to quickly write things on sticky notes. Those three big ideas that I kind of want to combine into this sketch of of this whole concept. And this concept doesn't have to be as you can see, it doesn't have to be everything. You don't have to design the entire service in every detail of how it works. But I just want to put forward these ideas. Hey, I think we should have these images like Pinterest. I think we should have this voting. I think we should have this being able to chat about certain options. I like these three. Kind of topics and I wanna put them in my concept sketch. So I've written these three on sticky notes and Justice put them next to my paper that I'm about to sketch on is that helps me really remember what I'm trying to sketch. And then I look back at the inspiration, those screen grabs of the things that I want to to draw and I might want to tweak them a little bit. But essentially I want to kind of copy those ideas and I start with on my paper with. Rectangle. Very the easiest thing to draw in the world. So really I've just. I've decided I would draw this as though someone's using it on their computer on the on the web. I could have also drawn it a mobile, but there's a bit less space in that so I decided to draw it on the web. We haven't decided yet. If we want web on mobile. I've got a rectangle I'm going to draw. I'm just going to put this kind of headline there. It doesn't really matter what it is, but just to show that this is the top of a page, I'm looking back at my Pinterest screen and putting. Um, some similar boxes. I put rounded corners on them and there you can see they're not perfectly neat as I'm drawing them, and that's OK. I just want to give the impression of a series of images that my family and I can share as we're trying to plan a trip together. And I'm just going to steal a little bit of detail from what I see in this example that I'm looking at, you can see, OK, there's the Eiffel Tower, just going to draw a few lines to try and make it look a bit like that and just drawing some other things. A little sun, little palm tree. OK. And we've got the impression there that that's this kind of Pinterest style images. We can share the destinations that we like with images. So I'm going to give it this title as well. Just call that the this is destination ideas share with images. OK. So that's looking pretty good. Now for this voting voting like Airbnb. This is pretty I think I wanna change it very much from the idea of Airbnb. Just give the really simple concept. So I'm just going to put these little hearts and the images. And. I think that gives a pretty clear impression. I probably will also write there. Just point out, cause the hearts are quite small, they're their hearts and I've got this red pen here as well. So I'm going to just colour that to show that really the hearts are there to so that each of them that me and my family members can use them to to pick my top three or my top, my favourites. So sometimes a little bit of colour can really help really explain the idea a bit more clearly. So then there's this chat. Um chat chatting about each place as well and I've decided to just keep that really simple. I just want to show what the idea would be like. I don't need to find some special place to put the chat, I'm just making this sidebar so that I'm using the other half of the screen here and calling it. I'm just going to copy again and just copy the names that are there. This this post is about somewhere in the South Island of New Zealand. I'm just going to call it that so that when people are reading my concept they can see we're chatting about. Destination idea. So I've got the just wanna put some realistic thing in there. And I copied the image a little bit too as the very basic some lines, triangle, squiggly, river and then the chat, the chat box as well and all I really need to show the idea that I wanna put in this like we can chat about this is just those little some little circles, little rectangles, squiggly lines and showing that we can have a chat. Now now I've got this, I think I'm really happy with what I've done here. Got these three ideas on the page. It's not perfect. If we would actually build this product, I'm sure we would put more detail in there. We could rearrange them information. But all I care about is that my team members that I'm working on this with because they're all going to share our ideas with each other, well, I care about is that they can understand what I'm trying to the ideas that I'm trying to put forward. So I'm also going to adjust rather than have these posts, these sticky notes just sitting there. I'm going to write just slightly more details so that when I share this image and I probably won't get to pitch the pitch this idea myself, I'm drawing this so that everyone can see my idea as well as my my teammates ideas as well. So I'm going to just write a few little notes to replace those stickies. So I'm going to write. Yeah, just slightly warm. It's beautiful gallery like Pinterest. And a little bit of a comment as well. OK, a little more notes for what I mean what these hearts are for. They don't want people to be able to choose their vote and and choose their favourites. And a little comment to explain as well that that this chat on the side is to chat for us to communicate as a family about each place and be able to comment on things. And that's it. That took me a very short time as you. As you can see, it can sometimes take a little bit more time, 5-10 minutes more to really think through your idea and look back at the inspirations, other things that you've been considering. It's really but it's really great to write. Write your ideas on post, Its on sticky notes. So pick your top 123 ideas, write them on stickies and put them on the desk in front of you. Have that paper ready. You might need to also sketch it. Once, and then scribble some things out and change it around, and then do a new sketch. But when you're only spending two to three minutes per sketch, or 5 minutes per sketch, that's not very long. You can sketch something and then just do a redraw to make it clear for showing it to your teammates, but that's how you can get started really, really quickly and easily. When you might feel a little intimidated or daunted by the idea of sketching, you can see that the only shapes I used here were rectangles, squiggly lines, and a few hearts to showcase that. Idea of having voting on favourites, but nothing. I didn't need to sketch anything fancy. In fact, when I did want to just put a little bit of an idea of an image, I just used what I saw on the screen triangle for the Eiffel Tower. Some triangles for some mountains just to show how you're sharing images about trip destinations. But you don't need to be an artist and you don't need to feel daunted by the idea of sketching out your concept idea. So I hope this helped you feel a little bit more comfortable with the idea of. Sketching out your concept to show to others really just need to use some basic shapes and doesn't take very much time at all. So happy sketching to you and good luck with your next innovation workshop.

Love the video and the „can do“ vibe it has…spot on for what it is for. I quite like it when not everything is perfect and in this case very encouraging. I will still give a thumbs 👍 up, because I am sure you can tweak it (or shorten it a little), but don’t overdo it…or keep parts as they are. Thanks and looking forward to more of your content on YouTube 🤩
