Africa’s banking map tells a bigger story than just numbers. Notice the geographical spread of the continent’s largest #banks by revenue — and with it, the balance of financial power. #SouthAfrica, #Nigeria, #Egypt, and #Morocco dominate the landscape. Each is home to multiple banks crossing the $1B annual revenue mark, signaling deep financial ecosystems that extend beyond their borders. These markets act as financial anchors for the continent. But look closer — you’ll notice outliers like Ecobank in #Togo and KCB in #Kenya. They prove that leadership in #African finance isn’t confined to the largest economies. Regional champions can rise from smaller markets and still influence cross-border capital flows. What this map reveals: Concentration: Just a handful of countries dominate Africa’s banking revenues. Regional champions: Banks like Ecobank (Togo) and KCB (Kenya) demonstrate scalability outside the “big four.” Potential gaps: Large swathes of the continent remain unrepresented. That’s less about demand and more about untapped opportunity. The next decade of African #banking won’t just be about the biggest banks getting bigger. It will be about who can capture underserved regions, build digital-first ecosystems, and integrate seamlessly into the #AfCFTA single market. Finance has always been the bloodstream of economies. For #Africa, the map shows where the heart currently beats — but the next pulse might come from entirely new places. All that in an economic landscape that is 80% cash.
This is quite interesting. I recently published the first of a series of papers on the topic of creating credit scoring systems for emerging and underserved markets and I think these countries would make interesting subjects for implementation studies.
You mentionned Kenya, that's right but you cannot ignore the impact of mobile payments with the giant M-Pesa processing part of Kenya's GDP.

This is a story of power, gaps, and opportunity.
In Kenya, I suppose Equity bank should feature. I believe based on data from 2022- current.
