Reflecting on last week's CS5 conference, it’s clear CMMC is much more than a compliance checkbox—it’s about achieving real, measurable security for US businesses.   A major takeaway was how the MITRE ATT&CK database tracks Iranian threat groups that use around 130 distinct attack techniques against US entities. Encouragingly, every one of these techniques is detectable, and about 70% are preventable through established NIST 800-53 security controls.   Even more impressive, just 10 core NIST 800-53 controls can fully block over half of all attack types, and a set of 14 provides robust protection against the most common threats. While NIST 800-171—forming the backbone of CMMC—does a solid job with these primary controls, some critical coverage and detail is lost when controls are narrowed down from 800-53. For maximum security, it’s vital to preserve the comprehensive language of 800-53 controls within 800-171, not dilute them for simplicity. At the same time, even with impressive coverage from 800-171, smaller businesses remain prime targets for cyber attackers. Their size doesn’t exempt them—it makes them attractive, since attacks on small companies rarely draw national scrutiny. Many small organizations also grapple with tight budgets, limited IT expertise, and the complexity of implementing security controls. These challenges can make compliance feel daunting, especially when it comes to technology upgrades and resource allocation.   However, embracing CMMC isn’t just about regulatory requirements—it’s about genuine risk reduction and business survival. By prioritizing core controls, working with trusted security partners, and leveraging available government or industry support, small businesses can significantly improve their defenses and secure their role in the defense supply chain.
