The Kent and Medway Respiratory Disease Network conference took place last Saturday at the Mercure Hotel near Maidstone. Trust acute physicians contributed to the programme with presentations by Dr Sanjay Sharma on bronchiectasis and Dr Leman Mutlu on asthma and allergies. Dr Sharma runs the bronchiectasis monthly MDT, providing support for acute care and community care of bronchiectasis across the county. The new asthma management guidelines were extensively discussed and noted the significant changes in management of asthma, a condition that affects six per cent of the UK population. The conference was chaired by Dr Helen Ramsey and Dr Neil Banik, GPs with special role in respiratory disease.

⚕️ Respiratory infections don’t just affect the lungs - they can seriously impact heart health. It is imperative that the value of immunisation against respiratory infections be recognized in the upcoming #CVH Plan. For people living with cardiovascular disease (CVD), respiratory infections can sharply raise the risk of: 🔺 Heart attacks 🔺 Strokes 🔺 Heart failure In 2022, 17,700 confirmed cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) were reported in the EU — a reminder of how significant the burden remains. Immunisation against #flu, #RSV, #COVID19 or hashtag#pneumococcal disease can reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular events, ICU admissions and related mortality. We must integrate #immunisation into EU strategies on #CVD prevention and healthy ageing. 📅 Learn more on 15 October. 🔗 http://bit.ly/4m5fwaJ #EURespiDay #EUFluDay #WorldHeartDay #VaccinesWork #Vaccination ##InfectiousDiseases #PublicHealth #PreventiveCare #HealthSecurity #RespiratoryHealth #AdultImmunizationBoard #LungHealth #PneumococcalDisease #FluPrevention #CardiovascularHealth #HeartHealth #CVDPrevention #StrokePrevention #AIB

What do you think of all the pop-up ‘clinics’ and shopping centres offering IV infusions and ‘vitamin shots’, allegedly to boost your immune system, fight fatigue and improve your brain function? As a doctor for 36 years, you can guess my opinion on these- I think they are risky, a waste of money, putting you at unnecessary risk of infection, allergy or anaphylaxis (and there have been deaths reported) and they cost a lot of money. We will NEVER offer these in our clinic. If you’re unwell, please see a registered medical doctor for a detailed consultation, assessment, examination and diagnosis, and treatment as needed. I put up countless IV’s during the many years I worked as a hospital doctor, and they can be life-saving in the proper setting, for infection, dehydration, sepsis, post op, and many other situations. For a private company to offer a €5 bag of iv fluids with some water-soluble vitamins in it, and charge you anywhere between €200-1000 per IV, in a non-medical setting is unsafe and unethical in my opinion and I would avoid these. #aestheticmedicine #dreithnebrenner #dublin

Helping the NHS Manage Winter Pressures with Faster Respiratory Diagnostics Every winter, the NHS faces the perfect storm: rising admissions with respiratory illness, bed capacity stretched, and pressure on staff. Respiratory tract infections like Flu, RSV and COVID-19 don’t just affect patients, they impact bed flow, PPE usage, and staff sickness too. Copan’s recent article on advances in respiratory diagnostics highlights how faster, multiplex testing and quality sampling are transforming care. The message is clear: speed and accuracy are no longer optional - they’re essential. That’s why we’re supporting NHS hospitals with a connected lateral flow test for COVID, RSV and Flu. It’s already proving its value in: • Rapid triage of respiratory patients in A&E and admissions units • Reducing unnecessary isolation and protecting precious side rooms • Smarter use of PPE - keeping staff safe while reducing waste • Minimising staff sickness by identifying infectious patients earlier And because every diagnostic result is only as good as the sample, we’re proud to be authorised distributors of Copan swabs, ensuring accurate, reliable sampling for both rapid and molecular testing. With the right tools, we can help NHS teams work more effectively, protect staff, and improve patient flow at a time when it matters most. #NHS #WinterPressures #Diagnostics #RespiratoryCare #PatientFlow #InfectionControl #Copan http://bit.ly/4h33Lky
