FIP 83rd World Congress in Copenhagen What a week at the 83rd FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Copenhagen! Connecting with passionate professionals from around the globe, all working to advance healthcare and the pharmaceutical sciences, has been an incredible experience. Three key takeaways I'm bringing home: ·       GMP trends & the future of drug manufacturing: AI-driven processes to supply chain resilience, regulatory harmonization, and sustainable practices, were highlighted at Industrial Pharmacy session. ·       Deprescribing: I gained new insights into how pharmacists can help reduce medication burdens and improve safety for aging populations. ·       Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): The conversations reinforced pharmacy's critical role in tackling this global health threat through stewardship and sustainability. ·       Shared Challenges: It was so valuable to connect with community pharmacy professionals from the U.S. and Europe to discuss solutions for polypharmacy, patient engagement, and system integration. The power of global collaboration was on full display. I was fortunate to meet Igor Linhares, the President of the Industrial Pharmacy Section of FIP and even had the honor of connecting with Prof. Lauro Moretto, winner of the IPS Medal 2025. As well, I was pleased to meet Paul Sinclair FIP’s President. 📉 New research from PwC and The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) highlights UK pharmaceutical investment has underperformed global levels since 2018, with foreign investment in life sciences falling by 58% over the last six years. Leaders across the sector are right to sound the alarm. Without a competitive environment for R&D and clinical trials, the UK risks losing ground to other countries making bold moves to attract life sciences investment. Clinical trials are central to both patient outcomes and the UK’s economic growth, but they depend on reliable infrastructure and technology that makes participation efficient, inclusive and cost-effective. A wave of high-profile pharma R&D investment withdrawals from the UK—by giants like AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Merck & Co, and Sanofi—speaks volumes about the faltering UK operating environment for pharma R&D. It's clear the current landscape is in need of serious reform. A key issue is the 2024-2028 Voluntary Scheme for Branded Medicines Pricing, Access and Growth (VPAG). Designed to be more predictable and supportive of R&D investment, VPAG's policy hiccups in 2023 and again in 2025 have turned companies away due to punitive payback rates. Astonishing increases in payback—from 15.1% in 2024 to a whopping 23.5% in 2025—triggered urgent discussions between the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). But with health secretary Wes Streeting walking out of negotiations on 22 August, the dialogue has, unfortunately, hit a stalemate. This impasse holds severe implications for the UK's pharma R&D landscape. Many companies have already started scaling back their investments. This is alarming. To maintain the UK's legacy in R&D and innovation, it's essential that both parties return to the table and find a mutually favourable resolution. As a recruiter in the pharma industry, I am witnessing first-hand the impact of such regulatory instabilities on job opportunities and talent acquisition. Our industry thrives on innovation and investment, and uncertainty hampers growth and the influx of fresh talent. Let's hope recent emergency talks between the UK parliamentary science committee and industry representatives restart productive conversations. The UK has the potential to be a global leader in life sciences, and this report from the ABPI identifies the key areas where action is urgently needed to stay competitive. The UK’s pharmaceutical sector delivers £17.6bn in GVA, supports 126,000 high-skilled jobs, and drives 17% of national R&D spend. However, investment is falling: life sciences FDI dropped 58% between 2021 and 2023, and R&D investment continues to lag global trends. Despite world-class science, top universities, and strong biotech talent, structural barriers; like high clawback rates, slow clinical trial set-up, and underinvestment in medicines, are eroding investor confidence. The UK’s high and unpredictable clawback rates on pharmaceutical revenues, set to rise to a minimum of 23.5% in 2025, are a major deterrent to investment and significantly undermine investor confidence. While clawback schemes exist in other countries, the scale and volatility of the UK’s approach have reached a critical point, leading global pharmaceutical companies to view the UK as a risk. This perception threatens not only future investment in the UK but also raises concerns about the potential global impact if similar practices are adopted elsewhere. Bristol-Myers Squibb CEO Chris Boerner states in his Handelsblatt interview: the US remains the global engine of pharmaceutical innovation. US pharma companies invest ~30x more in pharmaceutical R&D than their German counterparts. They are also much more effective in bringing those innovations to market. The EU has worldclass academic research, many startups with innovative ideas, new active compounds and concepts, but is much less effective when it comes to developing those young companies to maturity and market entry. However, there is hope. As Boerner noted, “It’s no coincidence that BioNTech exists in Germany.” Government support, private funding and collaboration made this possible. Imagine what Europe could achieve if we scaled that model. For LSAA, the path forward is clear: ✅ Unleash unprecedented private & public investment in life sciences ✅ Reduce bureaucracy and accelerate clinical trials in Europe ✅ Streamline approval processes ✅ Foster intra-EU and trusted US partnerships in science & capital ✅ Ensure that Europe is not just a consumer of innovation, but also a global leader in bringing innovative medicines to patients. ✅ Supporting a strong protection of IP on a European level The various EU (and German) initiatives are encouraging – but need to be implemented faster and reach further, given the increasing competition on a global scale – especially through China. Let’s make this a moment of acceleration for European life sciences.
