🚛 Are charging parks for trucks just bigger car charging stations? P3 colleague Paul Vigener explains why truck charging isn’t simply an extension of car charging—it's a whole new business model. For Charge Point Operators (CPOs), this means rethinking everything from site selection to daily operations: ▪️ 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲: Truck traffic is more evenly spread, with a midday plateau and significant activity at night. This enables continuous infrastructure use and opens opportunities for low-cost PV feed-in during midday. ▪️𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤: Unlike passenger cars, truck traffic remains high and steady on weekdays, dropping off on weekends. ▪️𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥: Heavy goods traffic shifts by day and direction—east-west early in the week, west-east later. Parks accessible from both sides of the highway have a clear advantage. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠? 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞? The best locations are being secured now. OneRail's hybrid fleet analysis nails what everyone misses: the choice isn't between owned trucks OR third-party delivery. Running 100% owned fleets breaks during peak season. Using 100% third-party sacrifices quality control. The answer has always been both. Smart operators use owned fleets for predictable volume and third-party for surge. It's portfolio theory applied to logistics.

Traffic delays across the UK have increased over the past year due to a combination of factors, including more people taking more journeys per week and expects have called on smart motorways to do more to tackle the issue. Smart motorways have been a controversial subject in recent years, with major investments and safety upgrades taking place. However, journey times on key routes have extended and experts are now questioning whether smart motorways are truly delivering the seamless journeys they promised to when first mooted. Are Smart Motorways Creating Traffic Issues? Evidence from research on smart motorways shows that there are specific points where traffic jams are occurring more often, suggesting that there are issues with the system. They appear to be at the point where smart motorways connect with non-smart motorways, with the transition between the two causing delays. Part of the issue is that while smart motorways manage traffic with variable speed limits, that stops when the roads transition into traditional motorways, which can lead to bottlenecks. There are calls from some road safety campaigners for smart motorways to factor this in and do more to prevent bottlenecks as roads change, but there are currently no plans to implement those features. But with congestion increasing over the last year, delays are increasing, and average journey times are reportedly increasing too. CLICK HERE to read the full story on the reality of delays and smart motorways on key routes across the country The safety issue remains, too, with the removal of hard shoulders still being criticised despite the work to install refuge zones being completed on smart motorways earlier this year. Part of the issue is that despite these refuge zones, a broken-down vehicle results in lane closures more often than not now, with drivers facing difficulties moving across lanes and reaching the refuge zones. The Cost of Congestion for Fleets For fleet operators, every minute lost in traffic is more than an inconvenience. Extra time on the road means lost productivity, higher fuel costs and increased driver fatigue, which can have a real impact on road safety. Multiply that across multiple vehicles and journeys each week, the impact can be substantial. Efficient route planning and real-time monitoring are more important than ever. Understanding where the worst pinch points occur, and having systems in place to adapt when they do, can make a real difference in keeping journeys efficient and costs under control. There are growing calls for a review into the performance of smart motorways, and for future investment to focus more on traditional road widening and junction improvements. In theory, smart technology can improve traffic flow through variable speed limits and lane management. In practice, inconsistent designs and a lack of clear communication for drivers can cause confusion, hesitation and slower travel overall. At Driving Monitor, we understand

The next FedEx won’t drive trucks. It’ll write code. While most logistics players are busy fighting over fuel costs, truck optimization, and delivery efficiency, a few founders had a bold light-bulb moment - “Let’s skip roads entirely.” That idea led to the birth of Zipline. Zipline has built an aerial network of autonomous drones, delivering everything from coffee to groceries to vaccines, all at a fraction of traditional costs. What’s most interesting is that Zipline’s business model looks more like a SaaS company than a shipping company. Yes, it requires heavy upfront capex, but once the network is live, each additional delivery costs almost nothing. In some markets, Zipline has already achieved delivery costs that are up to 70% cheaper than traditional ground logistics. This, in my view, is how we should envision the future of logistics, connected, autonomous, and constantly improving. Key takeaways from Zipline’s model: - Build once, monetize forever. - Technology should get smarter, not slower, with scale. - Automate what doesn’t scale and is repetitive. We’re less than a decade away from a logistics future that doesn’t dwell on trucks or fuel, but runs on algorithms, operates in the air, and redefines cost efficiency. Have thoughts on aviation or logistics? Let’s connect and discuss. — Hi, I’m Aryan. I share insights on financial markets, industry trends, and the business forces reshaping our world. Day 35 of my 100-day journey into aviation and beyond, because behind every jet, there’s always a bigger story. — Image: https://lnkd.in/evg2td-V #Logistics #FutureOfLogistics #Aviation #DroneDelivery
