Uh, I'm Jing Jing, currently a postdoc researcher with Baha, the Sharkov in the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and the Empirical Inference department. I'm also an incoming assistant professor at the University of Toronto, as well as faculty member of Vector Institutes if I chair, and very honored to be an Alice advisor now as well. I think Alice gives me an awesome experience connecting 2 supervisors who can be of different expertise and sit in different countries. And so for my PhD research I am able to work in the intersection of causality, which Bahad, my main supervisor is very good at, and NLP as the domain where my second supervisor. By Sachin at ETH Zurich is an expert in. We have a mixed level of hands on and hands off relationship with the 2 diverse mentors. Other than that, I really enjoy living across Germany and Switzerland which gives me different types of vibes and I believe many other athletes students who have two different countries across Europe or other territories also have find it personally interesting and diversifying their horizon. Ohh. So position wise, I am very honored that in my last year of the PhD, actually Banhart and Miami are largely supported me. So I went on the faculty job market, interviewed at multiple places and very happy to confirm that the final offer at the University of Toronto to be there. I think among all the current CS professors and they're joining date, I'm the youngest one. For the CS department at Utoronto, so really honored to be that. And also Ben had hosted me for a postdoc position so that I can further advance my research in the Max Planck setting and then I can further deepen my research on causality. We want to introduce a reliable causality driven large language model agent to help scientists in different domains maybe. Across social sciences, healthcare, chemistry, and others to find the cause and effect relationships in their domain. For me my driven motivation is always after science or for society and the causality type of research is advancing our AI for science frontier then AI for society side. For me like also having moved across multiple countries starting from China, finishing my undergraduate in Hong Kong and also together with a lot of research experiences in different parts of the world. Plus, now having a very solid experience in Europe makes me feel like the type of society that I appreciate, and at least here I really like how democracy is and how human rights are protected and so on. Therefore we have projects testing how language models are likely to admire or be pruned to authoritarian. Values and do they sacrifice human rights who are making a certain decision that trade off with profits or do they believe in certain misinformation in history or in the current world just to endorse certain values? So we really are tracking the different biases in models plus how they could potentially be misused to create propaganda and others. Because of the diverse experience I have accumulated now, I'm very happy to both pursue like deeper my PhD research and make it a solid research agenda. Last month I was invited to give a talk at several summer schools, including one on airfare science at UC Berkeley, and I feel really happy that my work has been recognized the people from different scientific. Our next want to do causal reasoning and AIM agents. The other thing I'm very excited about is sort of starting to curate a larger group and I can lead the future PhD. Also linking to my alias advisor role. I look forward to Co supervising students with European institutions and also bring what I enjoyed about Alice to the next generation. So that's my next passion.
