💡Creating a circular future for wind energy! The wind industry is committed to full sustainability, from innovation that makes turbines last longer and need less maintenance, to repurposing and recycling of components at the end of their service life. Turbine blades, manufactured from strong, durable composite materials that are inherently challenging to recycle, are a particular focus of attention. #EOLIAN proposes a new generation of blades with enhanced lifetime, maintainability, reliability, sustainability, and recyclability. The core strategy revolves around using #Electricity for the capture and conversion processes, which is much easier to decarbonise than the heat-powered solutions on the market. Electric vehicles are often viewed as zero-emission alternatives, but a complete sustainability analysis must consider their entire lifecycle, from production to operation and end-of-life. During the manufacturing phase, especially battery production, a significant amount of carbon emissions is generated. The extraction and processing of materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel contribute heavily to the overall environmental impact. However, once in operation, EVs produce no tailpipe emissions. Over time, their total carbon footprint decreases, particularly when charged using renewable energy sources. Studies show that over their lifetime, EVs can emit 50–70% less CO₂ compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. The real opportunity lies in making the production phase cleaner by using recycled materials, renewable-powered manufacturing, and efficient supply chains. Additionally, innovations in battery reuse and recycling can further reduce lifecycle emissions. From turbine waste to circular resources ♻️ Offshore wind is growing rapidly, but what will happen to the large volumes of composite materials from decommissioned turbines? Current reuse initiatives are not sufficient to manage these end-of-life materials. Other initiatives, such as recyclable turbine blades, are an exciting development, but they do not address the challenge of blades that were not produced with this principle in mind. CCM | Circularcovers.com brings leading partners together to further develop a promising technique for processing turbine blades into commercially usable raw materials for new applications. Over the next two years, we will investigate this technique in depth, including the underlying business case, process optimization, and scaling potential, with the goal of establishing a new circular industry for end-of-life turbine blades in The Netherlands.
