ESA’s expansion of the Estrack deep space network marks more than a technical leap—it’s a strategic signal. As space infrastructure becomes critical to global communications, navigation, and science, Europe’s ability to operate autonomously across deep space strengthens both resilience and influence within the emerging multi-planetary economy. The governance challenge will follow the signal path. Deep space communications, spectrum allocation, and navigation corridors will need cooperative frameworks that balance national capability with global interdependence. October 2025 heralds a new chapter in Australia’s space partnership with Europe. The European Space Agency (ESA) inaugurated its newest deep space antenna in New Norcia, 115km north of Perth, Western Australia. The ‘New Norcia 3’ antenna will support deep space communication with the ESA's flagship space missions and will be a critical enabler for upcoming missions. New and exciting opportunities between our space sectors are opening up, with Australia also announcing a mandate to begin negotiations on a cooperative agreement with ESA. This agreement will help deepen the existing partnership in space. Australia is well known as a trusted, experienced and capable operator in deep-space communications. The investment by ESA and the Australian Government will unlock millions of dollars in local economic value as well as employment over the projected lifetime of 50 years.

Taiwan’s FORMOSAT-8 Constellation Heads for Launch Taiwan Space Agency－TASA has dispatched the first satellite of the FORMOSAT-8 optical remote-sensing constellation for launch preparation in the United States. The constellation comprises eight domestically developed satellites—six with 1-meter and two with sub-meter resolution—scheduled for deployment through 2031 to provide high-frequency, high-resolution Earth observation. With an 84% local manufacturing rate, FORMOSAT-8 marks Taiwan’s first fully homegrown constellation, integrating technologies from 33 industrial, academic, and research partners. Key subsystems—including the satellite computer, power control unit, and attitude-orbit control—were developed domestically, enabling participating companies to gain flight heritage for future exports. Orbiting at 561 km in a sun-synchronous orbit, the system will deliver multiple daily revisits and global coverage for applications in land planning, agriculture, disaster management, and environmental monitoring—a milestone in advancing Taiwan’s precision manufacturing into the global space economy.

Member news: Atheras Analytics SAS Awarded European Space Agency - ESA Contract to Tackle Satellite Interference in Crowded Skies 🛰️ 'The project directly addresses one of the most pressing challenges in modern space communications: the increasing risk of signal interference between legacy Geostationary (GSO) satellites and the new wave of thousands of Non-Geostationary (NGSO) satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO). Under the contract, Atheras Analytics will develop a sophisticated “System Simulator for EPFD Evaluation Tool”. This software will provide ESA with a powerful new capability to go beyond static regulatory checks and conduct dynamic, system-level simulations. The tool will assess the real-world impact of NGSO interference on GSO system performance, such as its effects on service availability and data throughput. Crucially, the simulator is designed to assess the effect of changing the current EPFD limits, providing data-driven insights into how varying these international regulations could impact GSO services and whether they could be modified to accommodate future systems.'
