BALAS 2026 – Management & Business History Track (UPCOMING DEADLINE Oct 31) The 2026 conference will be held in Bogotá, Colombia, 24–27 March 2026. The Management & Business History Track, coordinated by Andrea Lluch and Julio Cesar Zuluaga, welcomes research that uses historical perspective to understand how businesses, managerial ideas, technologies, and organizations have developed in Latin America. We especially encourage submissions on: • The evolution of industries, firms, and entrepreneurship • Business history and family business dynasties • Long-term strategy, technological change, and innovation • Labor, talent management, and diversity (race, class, gender, migration) in organizational history • Corporate social responsibility, business–state relations, and the role of firms in providing public goods We particularly value work based on archival sources, oral histories, and historically grounded methods that also speak to theory in management, organization studies, or economic history. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the first session of “From Learning to Leading”, an employability program organized by Schiller International University to enhance the professional readiness of Master’s students. The session featured an enlightening lecture by Ángela Garrido, Director of Talent and People at Santander Bank, who provided in-depth insights into navigating the Spanish workplace. Key themes included the types of workers and employment contracts, the differences between the public and private sectors, labour market trends from 2025 to 2050, as well as interview practices, workplace culture, and effective job search strategies. This initiative represents an excellent bridge between academic formation and professional application, offering valuable guidance for students preparing to engage with the global labour market. Ermotti, Group CEO of UBS, engaged in an inspiring conversation with Rector Paolo Boccardelli about his fifty-year career, the meaning of leadership, the present and future of the financial sector.   Following the opening greetings from President Giorgio Fossa, the event offered the Luiss community an opportunity to reflect on how to navigate the complexities of today’s world, addressing students’ questions and insights. Among the key qualities highlighted by Mr. Ermotti to face the challenges of the future: curiosity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to embrace new technologies, starting with AI.

Austrian B Corps unite in Vienna! 🇦🇹 Last week, we witnessed the power of interdependence in action. At The Social Hub (B Corp™) in Vienna, B Lab Europe joined Junxion Strategy, Bikmo, and Cropster to host an inspiring event for businesses exploring how culture and values can shape a company’s impact from the inside out. Through an interactive workshop, participants explored how to build and measure a values-driven workplace culture using a scientifically robust values framework —an especially relevant topic as the new B Lab Standards bring purpose and fair work to the forefront. The session concluded with a panel of local B Corps who reflected on their certification journeys, discussing both the challenges they faced and the practices that have helped them create lasting impact. Additionally, the first self-organized group of B Corps and friends of the movement based in Vienna was launched. What if we shifted our mindset—and our language? I attended a launch event last week for the BIUST Student Enterprenuership Fellowship Programme in collaboration with the MIT Kuo Sharper Centre for Prosperity and Enteprenuership. It was such a well curated thought provoking event. One of the speakers, Dr Haitham Khoury said something that stuck with me. He said they have very few rules in the programme and one of them is that they stand by is using the right language. He challenged that instead of seeing economies as fixed categories e.g 1st or 3rd world, what if we spoke of them as developing, emerging, or growing? This simple shift acknowledges progress, potential, and movement. I must have openly nodded and clapped in agreement because it spoke directly to my inner sentiments. This isn’t just about political correctness. It’s about embracing a growth mindset—in business, in society, and within ourselves. When we label economies as “developing” or “growing,” we recognize potential, not deficiency. We frame markets as dynamic, not deficient. This isn’t just semantics—it’s a strategic shift. It opens up room for investment, innovation, and inclusive policy thinking. How we frame challenges and opportunities has real-world consequences. Let’s choose language that builds bridges, not walls.
