Field Museum’s Post

25 years ago today, you met SUE. 🦖 On May 17, 2000, SUE the T. rex was officially unveiled to the world in our main hall. 🌍 Since then, our fierce fossil has greeted millions of Chicago visitors, moved to a ✨ sweet ✨ new suite on our second floor, and helped scientists discover new information about how this dino looked and lived. One thing that hasn't changed in the last quarter century: SUE remains the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil to be discovered. 💪 Revisit this 67-million-year-old icon. ➡️ fieldmuseum.io/visit

  • Visitors at the Field Museum admiring the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex displayed in a grand hall with a mural in the background.
  • The skeleton of Tyrannosaurus rex on display at a museum with an audience seated around in red shirts.
  • A group of children wearing red shirts, along with adults, watching a robotic dinosaur exhibit at the Field Museum. The atmosphere is lively with blue and purple lighting enhancing the dramatic presentation.

One of the most memorable interactions I have had as the poet at the Field was with a five-year-old boy who had just come out from seeing Sue. During our conversation, he composed this haiku: Those are some big bones! Wonder how big Sue’s heart was— just open space now.

I remember when we brought a SUE cast to Washington for a special unveiling by the Speaker and other Members of Congress and exhibit at Union Station. What a fun memory!

I was there that day as an intern at the Field, working for Jean Cattell. Crazy how time flys.
