From the archives: Silicon Valley’s New Social Network. In our October 2008 issue, Fortune highlighted the rise of women leaders in Silicon Valley. The cover featured Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, Ning’s Gina Bianchini, Google’s Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, and Accel Partners’ Theresia Gouw Ranzetta. These women represented a new generation of leadership—different from the pioneers who broke Silicon Valley’s glass ceiling in the 1980s and ’90s. “We’re hitting our stride in our careers just as we’re having children. We’re not willing to give up the joys of either,” said Singh Cassidy. Together, they helped redefine the tech industry’s power structure and reshape the face of Silicon Valley.
