“Meaning, Values, and Purpose (MVP) is central to the work that we do.” —Colin West on Bradley Block, MD podcast So true. How do you get to meaning, values, and purpose? It starts by digging into the domains Maslach & Leiter identified that drive wellbeing or distress at work: Workload Values Reward Fairness Control Community Fantastic & educational conversation for anyone passionate about wellbeing. In healthcare, if we focus on our neighbors and neighborhood health, we will not lose our way Gabe Charbonneau, MD To stay focused on neighbors and neighborhood for us it means choosing to not engage with the system as it is. The system is too good at powering over good, meaningful work. We say, "We are out!" Instead, our work is to reinvest in neighborhoods in a way that neighbors want to sustain the efforts. We seek to advance and support neighborhood sustainment of basic healthcare for neighbors without the "help" of the current hierarchical, competitive, power over, and non-relational healthcare system and culture in the USA. #NeighborhoodCare #RelationalFoundations for a #Meaningful #HealthcareSystem #WouldYouBeMyNeighbor

1moThanks, Gabe Charbonneau, MD — really appreciate you highlighting this. Colin West did an amazing job unpacking how those six domains show up in medicine, and what happens when they’re out of balance. It’s a framework every physician (and leader) should be familiar with if we’re serious about wellbeing. And it was great to meet him in person at the American Conference for Physician Health last week.
