🌡️ AI is reshaping the demands on data-centre cooling...and the stakes are high! AI workloads are pushing servers to much higher power densities, producing unprecedented levels of heat. Traditional cooling systems may no longer suffice. The latest edition of News in the Channel draws attention to this growing reality, with some great perspectives shared by Tim Mitchell, from Klima-Therm, Jeremy Isaacs from Ricoh UK and VimalRaj Sampathkumar from ManageEngine UK. Key takeaways: ⚡ AI already accounts for around 20% of global data centre electricity use, and that figure could approach 50% by 2025. ⚡ The strain from power and heat could become a limiting factor - potentially even outpacing grid capacity. ⚡ Meeting this challenge will require smarter infrastructure, more efficient cooling designs, and sustainability-first thinking. Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) is emerging as a solution to the challenges posed by traditional electrical interconnects in data centers, especially as AI workloads continue to grow. These conventional interconnects are reaching their physical limits, consuming excessive power and struggling to transmit data quickly enough. CPO addresses these issues by integrating optical components directly alongside compute chips. This innovation allows data to travel at the speed of light while significantly reducing energy consumption. The benefits of CPO include: - Faster AI data pipelines - Lower power consumption - Smaller, more efficient data center designs In essence, CPO represents the future of AI infrastructure, facilitating communication through light rather than electricity.

Headline: AI & digital twins break new ground in T&D operations Hook: A wave of research and pilots is showing how AI plus grid digital twins can unlock faster, smarter, safer transmission and distribution management. Grid operators and researchers are increasingly combining digital twin models with AI / reinforcement learning to optimize topology control and anomaly detection. A recent paper using TenneT data presents a scalable multi‑objective RL approach for grid topology optimization, generating day‑ahead plans in 4–7 minutes for real systems. Another study shows how digital twin + ML frameworks can monitor power electronics‑rich circuits for anomalies — a critical capability as grids evolve. On the industry front, the joint ENTSO‑E / DSO Entity “TSO‑DSO Challenges & Opportunities” report flags digital twins as a linchpin for harmonizing planning, operational visibility and dynamic control across domains. GE Vernova also recently released whitepapers exploring pragmatic AI deployment across grid operations and markets. Why it matters: • 🚦 Real‑time flexibility: AI + twins help automate congestion relief, switch topology, and reconfigure grids more responsively • 🛡 Resilience & security: anomaly detection in digitally modeled systems can flag faults or cyber threats before escalation • 📊 Efficiency & cost control: faster decision cycles reduce reliance on manual analysis, trimming OPEX and unlocking latent capacity Hashtags: #DigitalTwin #GridAI #TopologyControl #SmartGrid #GridOperations
