🔌 Understanding Data Center Costs & Capacity in Today's Market 🔌 Did you know the cost to build a data center can range dramatically from under $1 million to as high as $17-19 million per MW? That's not just a number—it's a reflection of the technology, reliability, and cooling requirements involved. For instance: A standard enterprise-grade data center typically costs between $7M–$12M per MW to build. Crypto-focused data centers, which require less reliability, can be built for as low as $300,000 per MW. Why the variation? A lot comes down to the critical cooling systems. A 30 MW data center, for example, converts 30 MW of electricity directly into heat—demanding advanced, energy-efficient cooling solutions to maintain performance and protect sensitive hardware. But there's another bottleneck: long lead times for critical hardware. Transformers currently have waiting times of 1.5 to 4 years, while generators require 1.4 to 2 years—adding significant complexity to planning and expansion. For businesses planning data center investments, understanding these variables is key to balancing cost, capacity, and future-proofing.
