How to prevent LinkedIn account hacking: Check your email addresses

Some advice from my humbling experience of having my LinkedIn hacked this week, despite me generally using pretty intense security measures: Check your email addresses associated with your account. It seems they used an old one to get in and then remove my main email, all somehow without triggering 2FA or an email notification. I'm admittedly guessing how they did it, but it was noticeable that the account had been switched to use that old email as the primary. Luckily observant friends flagged me quickly, and I was able to reclaim the account using LinkedIn's verification tools. (It seems the hackers were using my account to get phone numbers under the guise of networking/mentorship, then text them sketchy download links.) Anyway, just a good reminder even for those of us who think we're on the paranoid side to dig into your security settings every once in a while and keep your profiles clean of old contact info!

Thanks for the reminder David.

Thanks for sharing this experience—what a reminder that even strong security measures aren’t foolproof. Checking old emails and account settings regularly is so important. Glad you were able to regain control quickly, and your advice on staying vigilant is spot on for all of us navigating professional networks.

Thanks for sharing, David. A friend of mine experienced this too - insane how quickly and thoroughly it can happen.
