We often hear about the benefits of HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) transmission — long-distance efficiency, grid stability, and renewable integration. However, what’s less visible are the massive construction and logistics challenges that come with execution. Here are some key reasons: 🔹 Complex Infrastructure – HVDC converter stations are gigantic, requiring specialised buildings, advanced cooling systems, and high-voltage equipment foundations. 🔹 Heavy & Specialised Equipment – HVDC transformers and reactors can weigh 300–400 tons each! Transporting them often means reinforcing bridges, modifying roads, or even creating temporary ports. 🔹 Challenging Routes – HVDC lines pass through deserts, forests, mountains, and sometimes under the sea. Securing right-of-way, environmental clearances, and land can take years. 🔹 Submarine & Underground Cables – Laying these requires specialised ships, weather windows, and precise seabed mapping. Repairing them later is extremely costly. 🔹 Global Supply Chain Dependence – Only a few companies manufacture key HVDC components. Any delay in production or shipping can push timelines by months. 🔹 Specialised Workforce – HVDC execution demands rare expertise across civil, mechanical, electrical, and digital domains.
