“Life is too short. Get the tattoo.” Those were our Ward Clerk Pina’s words during our interview, and two weeks later I’m still thinking about them. Take chances, worry less, enjoy more. And I’m taking Pina’s advice. Pina was diagnosed last year with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and went through treatment at HCA Healthcare UK at UCH. She bore her cancer journey with a quiet strength and dignity that moved every single one of us who had the privilege to walk alongside her. It was her incredible matron Sally, her manager Michael and our CNS Liliana who encouraged her to access her private healthcare when answers from the NHS weren’t coming fast enough. That decision changed everything. Pina completed her chemotherapy surrounded by the team at UCH who treated her like family, and she’s now back to work on our ITU ward at The Harley Street Clinic, still managing the effects of both the cancer and the chemo, but doing it with her signature grit and grace. She is loved by her team. Supported every single day. And her story is a powerful reminder that compassion at work isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s everything.
