Venture firms lead $2.3m backing to develop AI co-pilot Brisbane-based start-up founders Haziq Nordin, Mike Keating and Jesse Head (pictured) in Los Angeles where they are getting major technology firms to test their AI co-pilot technology. The main point of difference for the technology being developed by Enhanced Labs, is that it bases prompts on an organisation's specific knowledge rather than information available on the internet. Corporate venture building is changing. With Jiva closing under Olam’s Updated 2025 plan to conserve cash and cut debt (>600 roles affected across SG/ID/IN/AU) it’s the right time to reflect. What to learn: 💡 Don’t scale ahead of proof. Multi-country rollout with a huge team raised burn; when the parent tightened the balance sheet, funding couldn’t continue. 💡 Closed-loop models (1 venture handles the whole farmer journey) are capital-hungry. Input credit/BNPL, free delivery, and crop offtake improve farmer outcomes but requires heavy working capital 💡 Keep the wins. Jiva still reached ~200,000 farmers—evidence there’s real demand if models stay lean and milestone-funded. The uncomfortable truth about agritech is tha most “innovation” is just old wine in new bottles. There is a wave of agritech companies that are essentially digital middlemen riding the same stodgy supply chains they claim to disrupt. Incremental 10-20% farmer income improvements might attract seed funding, but they’re not solving the fundamental crisis. The real problems: → We’re chasing a 58-65 year old farmer demographic that won’t fundamentally change their practices → Despite record abundance, real-term agricultural prices have declined over 30 years → Most farmers aren’t growing crops suited to their land (DeHaat’s early advisory model showed this alone can double income) → Disguised unemployment, urban migration, and feudal structures remain unaddressed Building a trading app isn’t agritech. It’s fintech with a tractor emoji. True agricultural transformation requires going back to first principles: What if we stopped trying to digitize broken systems and instead asked what farming should look like for the next generation? What if doubling farmer income was the baseline, not the moonshot? We have an abundance problem disguised as a distribution problem, wrapped in a technology problem. Until we reimagine agriculture from the ground up—land suitability, farmer demographics, income structures, and social systems—we’re just rearranging deck chairs. I don’t have all the answers, but I know we’re asking the wrong questions.
