Post #1 of 4. I recently had the privilege of leading a panel discussion at the Shaping CT's Future event, where we tackled leadership and workforce development questions head-on. The insights from our panelists were powerful and practical and worth sharing with a broader audience. Here are the insights from our first discussion topic. 👥 What does it actually take to build and retain a workforce that works, especially now, when hiring challenges are only increasing? 🔹 Hire for mindset, not just skillset. As Foster Charles emphasized, it’s time to prioritize people who are hungry, humble, and smart. Skills can be taught; character and growth mindset are harder to instill. Hire the right people and invest in their training and create space for them to grow. 🔹 Make access more equitable and flexible. Dr. O. John Maduko, M.D. highlighted that our traditional talent pipelines need to evolve. That means companies need to expand access to grow their pool of potential applicants. Companies also need to design easier on-ramps and off-ramps for potential team members. One-size-fits-all simply doesn’t fit anymore. 🔹 Reduce fear, increase simplicity. Linda Albright reminded us that fear often keeps adult learners from taking their next step. Emerging tech, especially AI, can help remove friction and simplify the path forward. 🔹 Shift the paradigm. Matthew Wallace challenged us to rethink old models. Hiring people with high emotional intelligence and courage is critical, but so is reimagining work itself: profit sharing, flexible vacation, and more humane policies aren't just perks…they’re strategy. 💡 As leaders, we have a choice: adapt or fall behind. The workforce of the future will be shaped by those who prioritize mindset, access, simplicity, and innovation. The Workforce Autumn The end of summer always feels like a turning point. Kids head back to school. Vacations wind down. The mornings feel cooler, and the leaves begin their slow shift into fall colors. Change is in the air. Right now, the workforce itself is entering its own autumn. - AI is emerging as a co-worker, reshaping roles and collaboration. - Employees are reevaluating their careers and expectations. - Economic pressures are forcing businesses to rethink priorities. At first, change can feel like loss, like leaves falling from the trees. But in reality, it’s preparation. The shedding of the old makes space for what’s next.
