Hines Research estimates that 40,000 acres of powered land—almost 2 billion square feet—are needed to support current projections for data center growth over the next 5 years. In a recent report we present evidence that there’s significant (and one could argue challenging) expansion ahead in data center capacity—and a strong need for powered land. Community Voices Rise Ahead of Texas Data Center Decision! Local residents in Jarrell, Texas are raising important questions about the proposed Mesone Data Center project, a new 150 acre development. During a recent City Council Q&A session, citizens voiced concerns about the project’s impact on water and electrical infrastructure, site suitability, and the limited transparency surrounding its details. The project’s future now hinges on an upcoming City Council vote on October 14, where members will decide whether to rezone the land. The Planning and Zoning Commission has already recommended approval following a vote in August. This discussion highlights the growing tension many communities face balancing the economic promise of digital infrastructure with the sustainability and quality of life concerns of local residents. 💬 What’s your perspective? How can cities ensure responsible data center growth that aligns with community and environmental needs? #DataCenters #ProjectNews #Texas #TexasDevelopment

A 120-acre data center is to be built between the Canadian cities of Calgary and Edmonton, reported DatacenterDynamics. "On October 7, the Red Deer County Planning Commission voted to approve an application for a modular data center located on a 1,000 sqm (10,765 sq ft) land parcel in Blindman Industrial Park. This will be accompanied by the construction of an administration building." "Details about the facility's estimated capacity were not shared." "The county, located in the southern half of Alberta, one of Canada’s western provinces, received the permit application for the data center in mid-July. The applicant, Agritech Haven International (AHI), is a “technology-focused real estate development company” known for backing a vertical farming project in the province." https://lnkd.in/dGT9fmNr #alberta #datacentre #development

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, pending approvals and resolution of utility, water, and development agreement. The site sits between Schweitzer Road (north) and Millsdale Road (south), adjacent to a planned warehouse business park. Local scrutiny is high: city and developer will need to resolve questions about electricity load, water use, and infrastructure demands before a vote moves ahead. what’s your take on how quickly the data centre boom is reshaping our world? City of Joliet Defers Vote on Controversial Data Center Project After massive public outrage from local homeowners, the City of Joliet Planning Committee has postponed its October 16 meeting to November 20. The proposed Joliet data center development would include 24 buildings, each three stories high — a sprawling industrial complex that would forever alter our community. To put this in perspective: a single AI data center can consume as much electricity as 80,000 U.S. households — and Joliet is planning twenty-four of them. Residents are deeply concerned about the project’s impact on the Joliet Aquifer, which supplies drinking water to the region. The facility would consume millions of gallons of water every day, depleting local resources and pumping toxic chemicals back into the environment. Equally troubling, homeowners could face higher electricity bills due to massive subsidies extended to data center companies. In Virginia, for example, wholesale electricity prices have surged by up to 267% in just five years in areas surrounding data centers — a cost ultimately passed on to residents. Our message is clear: We don’t want this data center in Joliet. It’s a threat to our water, our environment, and our wallets. On November 20, we must stand together and demand that city officials reject this project and protect Joliet’s future — not sell it off to corporate interests.
