The Myth of “Bringing Your Authentic Self to Work” I recently had a deep conversation with a colleague about the phrase we hear so often in workplace culture “Bring your authentic self to work.” At first, it sounds empowering. But for many immigrants, first-generation professionals, and people from marginalized backgrounds, this message can feel like a trap. The truth is: the workplace doesn’t always have space for our authentic selves it rewards our survival selves. For those navigating acculturation, systemic bias, or subtle exclusion, the “professional self” is often a protective adaptation the version of us that speaks the right way, suppresses cultural expressions, and works twice as hard to be seen as competent or safe. It’s not inauthentic; it’s a survival strategy born from navigating environments that don’t yet understand or fully accept difference. This tension between authenticity and assimilation sits at the heart of the immigrant experience in professional spaces. We long to show up as whole, complex humans but our nervous systems have learned that safety sometimes requires silence, perfectionism, or emotional restraint. That’s why I’m developing a curriculum and course on acculturation and identity in the workplace, exploring questions like: What does it mean to be “authentic” when authenticity has consequences? How does acculturation shape our nervous system and professional identity? How can leaders and organizations move from demanding authenticity to creating safety for it? My work reframes this through the lens of the Grounded Identity Model, where we distinguish between the authentic self, the adaptive self, and the survival self. True authenticity isn’t about oversharing or defiance; it’s about grounding our identity in safety, self-awareness, and agency, so we can choose how to show up, not just react to what’s expected. Until workplaces evolve to hold our full humanity, many of us will keep bringing our professional survival self and that’s okay. It’s not a failure of authenticity; it’s evidence of resilience.

New Words, New Experts: The Emergence of the Radicalization and Violent Extremism Expertise is my new paper published in the Journal of Applied Social Science. It shows how competition & collaboration shape expertise and policy in this evolving field using data from government and expert reports, websites, and 15 interviews (2018–2020). It reveals that competition and cooperation among experts produce distinct types of expertise, each pursuing different goals, initiatives, and strategies for funding and authority. The research highlights that tensions and collaborations between government and expert actors are integral rather than problematic. This ambiguity, rather than indicating weakness, drives innovation and adaptability in the field.
