New insights reveal gender-specific links between abdominal fat and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) risk, reshaping how prevention and management strategies might be tailored. This comprehensive study involving over 35,000 participants from the UK Biobank utilized advanced magnetic resonance imaging to assess visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat. Key findings highlight: 🔹 Visceral fat poses a higher GERD risk than subcutaneous fat, especially in women. 🔹 Women with the highest levels of abdominal fat had more than double the risk of developing GERD compared to those with the lowest levels. 🔹 Younger women are particularly sensitive to increases in abdominal fat, emphasizing the need for age- and gender-tailored assessments. 🔹 In men, visceral fat was significantly associated with GERD risk, unlike subcutaneous fat. These results underscore the critical role of sex-specific fat distribution in GERD development and the importance of personalized medical guidance considering both biological sex and age. The treatment combined two ingredients: povidone-iodine (1%) and dexamethasone (0.08%). What Worked? The combination of povidone-iodine and dexamethasone was found to be very effective. Patients who used this combination experienced better vision, fewer symptoms, and a lower chance of their condition coming back compared to those who only used one of the treatments. What Didn’t Work? Using povidone-iodine or dexamethasone alone was not as effective as the combination treatment. How This Helps Patients and Clinics Patients can expect better results in their vision and comfort when treated with the combination eye drops. Clinics can offer a more effective treatment option that may lead to fewer follow-up visits for recurring issues. Prevent 61,000 cardiovascular events, save £2.5 billion in 3 years with a realistic step change in secondary prevention: the CVDACTION Impact Report The 10 Year Plan says the 'NHS has avoided taking its responsibility seriously on secondary Prevention'. Widespread underuse of NICE recommended treatments for conditions that cause CVD (like blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and chronic kidney disease) is longstanding and entrenched. Savings include health, social care and wider economy. Costs (including medicines and transformation support for primary) are dwarfed by the savings. 🔹 ICBs see full return on investment in first year after achieving Step Change scenario. By 3 years, £4 is recouped for every £1 invested.   These numbers are huge.
