International Climate Initiative’s Post

Brazil has advanced key national strategies that embed ocean conservation and sustainable use into climate policy — with support from Germany´s International Climate Initiative (IKI). ‼️ Key achievements: ✅ Marine Spatial Planning (MSP): IKI supported national training, assessments, and stakeholder workshops that laid the foundation for MSP in Brazil — now institutionalised by federal decree. ✅ Mangrove protection: Home to the world’s second-largest mangrove area, Brazil is strengthening mangrove conservation through a new national programme shaped with input from government, academia, civil society, and traditional communities. ✅ Coral reef conservation: Following the most severe coral bleaching event on record, the IKI contributed to the development of Brazil’s national coral reef strategy and action plan — formally adopted in 2025 and presented at the UN Ocean Conference. ✅ Climate Adaptation Plan for the Ocean and Coastal Zone: The IKI is supporting Brazil in developing its first national plan to address the impacts of climate change on marine and coastal ecosystems — expected to be approved at COP30. With over 8,500 km of coastline and rich marine biodiversity, Brazil plays a central role in global ocean conservation. These initiatives mark major progress in aligning ocean conservation with climate action and resilience. 🔎 Learn more about how our IKI project TerraMar II is driving concrete action for healthy oceans and a sustainable future: https://lnkd.in/dJsqxvDX #IKIinBrazil #IKItopics #biodiversity #ClimateAction Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH GIZ Brasil Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Klimaschutz, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit (BMUKN) 📷 Studio Lumix/GIZ
