#newsround: Prisoners repair their own prison – on proper pay An open prison has trumpeted the success of a scheme under which its residents are granted ‘day release’ to carry out repair work and earn a full wage – without leaving the jail HMP Leyhill devised the scheme in partnership with the prison maintenance contractor Gov Facility Services Limited (GFSL). They say it marks a “significant step forward in the national effort to reduce reoffending and support prisoner rehabilitation by demonstrating the positive impact of employment opportunities for serving prisoners”. https://lnkd.in/ejsFrnGE

There are more than 600 people from DC who were sentenced to prison and are eligible for parole, and 500 people on community supervision in DC who remain in the community at the discretion of the United States Parole Commission. A new report from the Prison Policy Initiative explores how parole systems make their decisions in a “seemingly arbitrary or confusing way,” resulting in “fewer parole cases [being] heard and granted each year, despite it being a clear option to reducing incarcerated populations.” Read more about the Prison Policy Initiative's research on parole, and learn more from the DC Justice Lab Library about parole and supervised release in DC. https://lnkd.in/gjJqSgCw

Aging prison populations are reshaping the challenges facing correctional systems nationwide. But as The New York Times recently highlighted in an op-ed, research shows that incarcerating people in their late 50’s and beyond does little for public safety—while diverting resources from more effective approaches. Through the lens of Minnesota's prison system, CJI’s report explores how aging populations, safety concerns, and facility limitations affect both public safety and rehabilitation, and outlines a path forward. 🔗 NYT article: https://lnkd.in/epgqpHGa 🔗 CJI Report: https://lnkd.in/g-k64mBJ #CriminalJustice #PrisonPopulation #Minnesota #DataDrivenJustice

A Deficit in Trust & Lengthy Delays in Sentence Progression Leaving Long-Term Prisoners Without Hope A new Prison Reform Trust report based on prisoner-led consultations at HMP Glenochil exposes serious flaws in Scotland’s sentence progression system. Key findings: - Systemic delays in accessing educational, therapeutic programs, assessments and transfers mean many prisoners, including those on life sentences or Orders for Lifelong Restriction, remain detained far beyond the tariff (punishment phase) of their sentence. - Poor communication, lack of transparency, and inconsistent recognition of personal change erode trust and with it, hope. Prisoners reported waiting years before being given the chance to move ahead. - Additional barriers disproportionately affect prisoners with extra needs (neurodivergence, health issues, language) who do not receive appropriate support. Calls-to-action include: - Clear timelines & consistent access to rehabilitative opportunities. - Improved communication and accountability in decision-making. - Tailored support for people with additional needs. Why this matters: Restoring hope isn’t just humane, it’s essential for rehabilitation, safer communities, and a fair justice system. #PrisonReform #JusticeSystem #HumanRights #Rehabilitation #SocialJustice #ScottishJustice #PrisonPolicy #CriminalJusticeReform #EquityInJustice #SentenceProgression #SecondChances https://lnkd.in/eSkHZn6S

How Unpaid Fines Fill Prisons I have done this infographic, published in the Daily Mirror, based on data highlighting the link between unpaid fines and prison overcrowding in Sri Lanka. In 2022, 64% of prisoners were sentenced to jail for failing to pay fines. The cost of maintaining these prisoners often exceeds the value of the unpaid fines, revealing inefficiencies in the justice and correctional systems. #Infographic #DailyMirror #SriLanka #JusticeSystem #PrisonReform #Overcrowding #DataVisualization #VisualJournalism #PublicPolicy #SocialImpact #Governance #Accountability #LawAndOrder https://lnkd.in/gQgjuNG2

Prison security tackles FDV Initiatives taken by a regional prison security team have led to greater detection and prevention of family and domestic violence (FDV) offences. The team from Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison (EGRP) collaborated with WA Police Force to crack down on FDV offending via prisoner telephone calls. The security officers worked with WA Police to identify and more closely monitor new prisoners considered likely to re-offend, leading to further FDV-related charges against individuals. The EGRP team also began deactivating prisoners’ telephone contact lists after they were released, ensuring a returning prisoner would need to re-apply for approval of their contacts. This brought about a reduction in offending. “The measures taken at EGRP show the value of partnering with other agencies to help protect victims and enhance safety community,” Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce said.

#newsround: Progression through Scottish prisons is painful, says Prison Reform Trust A prisoner-led collaboration between the Prison Reform Trust’s Building Futures team and inmates in Scotland’s HMP Glenochil has found that progression through the Scottish prison system for long-term inmates is “painful and slow”. The PRT says the aim of the exercise was to “amplify the voices of those most affected, those inside jails” who find themselves unable to access the courses that are supposed to be available to enable them to progress. The report (pictured) found that opportunities for personal change and development are lacking, even though these are supposed to be vital for rehabilitation. https://lnkd.in/dxmPmJU7
