Flood forecasting depends on reliable data, but in Hue, Vietnam, older river gauging stations have often failed during heavy rains, slowing down warnings and risking community safety. To close the gap, ISET worked closely with city's Disaster Risk Management office to install 2 automatic water level gauges in 2024. After proving their effectiveness, 2 more automatic river gauges were added in Huế this year, now 4 in total. These gauges provide reliable, real-time flood data, even when older stations fail, helping local authorities issue faster warnings and keep communities safe. Tackling flood risk needs long-term vision and evidence-led solutions. Earlier this month, Professor Robert Van de Noort, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading spoke at an event in Cookham introduced by former Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Baroness Theresa May. As President of the River Thames Society and a former chair of the Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, Professor Van de Noort emphasised the importance of research and planning to safeguard riverside communities. “The University of Reading's research into the environment, including weather and climate change, clearly demonstrates the importance of long-term thinking to protect people against floods.” Full story: https://rdg.ac/3KJChUG #MaidenheadWaterways #RiverThames #ClimateChange #FloodMitigation #FloodAdaptation #Cookham #Flooding

🌍 Excited to share my project Flood Early Warning & Safety System 🌊💡 This initiative supports climate resilience by using real-time weather data, community reporting, SMS & voice alerts (for areas with low internet access) to provide timely flood warnings and safety guidance. The goal is to empower vulnerable communities in Pakistan with technology-driven solutions that can save lives, strengthen disaster preparedness, and support climate adaptation. 🎥 Here’s a short demo of the system in action — I’d love to get your feedback, ideas, and suggestions on how to improve and scale this further! 💬👇 #ClimateAction #ClimateResilience #TechForGood #DisasterManagement #Innovation

Proud to announce that ANU has published our work on evaluation techniques for flood mitigation projects that use nature-based solutiuons. Nature-based solutions can help by detaining floodwater, reducing the energy and extent of floods and diverting floods. Examples include planting trees, restoring vegetation along waterways, rebuilding old stream channels, and adjusting how land is used near rivers. With help from communities and local governments across regional NSW and South-East Queensland, the team developed Nature-based Solutions for flood mitigation in Australia - a set of guidelines which show how these solutions can be used effectively in different regions. The guide was funded by National Emergency Management Agency and explains: - How to assess and choose the best options - Different types of NbS and how they work - How to measure their benefits - Real-world, practical approaches for each area https://lnkd.in/gFEx-myp #floods #nature #economics ANU Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions

The Environment Agency has updated the Flood Map for Planning (FMFP) with a new map layer showing how flood zones are projected to change under climate change scenarios. At FPS Environmental, we’re already working with clients to interpret these changes and ensure their #FloodRiskAssessments reflect the latest data. 🌏 National Climate Risk Assessment: A Call for Flood Preparedness The Australian Climate Service's new National Climate Risk Assessment highlights what many emergency managers already know: flooding is among the top hazards we face. #Flooding has already been responsible for 20% of natural hazard deaths in Australia between 1900 and 2022. Looking ahead, more extreme rainfall and volatile weather patterns will only increase the pressure on communities and the agencies that protect them. At FloodMapp, we believe preparedness is the best protection. Dynamic forecast flood maps and real-time flood intelligence help agencies anticipate impacts, protect infrastructure, and keep people safe as hazards evolve. The ACS report is an important step in building shared understanding. Now, it’s up to all of us to act. 🔗 Read the ACS summary: https://hubs.ly/Q03JlXZg0 📊 Learn about FloodMapp: https://hubs.ly/Q03JlQwy0 #FloodPreparedness #EmergencyManagement #FloodForecasting #ACS #NationalClimateRiskAssessment

The devastating floods in Pakistan, as highlighted in this 𝗬𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝟯𝟲𝟬 article, underscore a critical intersection between climate change, infrastructure vulnerability, and environmental planning. One of the most pressing technical challenges is the lack of resilient land-use planning and floodplain management in rapidly urbanizing regions. From an environmental consultancy perspective, this situation calls for: • Integrated watershed management to reduce runoff and improve natural absorption. • Climate-adaptive infrastructure that accounts for shifting rainfall patterns and extreme weather events. • Community-based EHS frameworks that prioritize early warning systems, emergency response, and public health safeguards. As professionals in the environmental field, we must advocate for data-driven risk assessments and multi-sector collaboration to ensure that climate resilience is not just a policy goal, but a practical reality — especially in vulnerable regions. Floods are increasing in both frequency and cost. By 2050, annual global flood losses could surpass $1 trillion, creating constant threats to cities, businesses, and communities. The L-Shaped Flood Control Barrier provides a practical defense. Its insert-and-lock system allows panels to connect quickly, creating a durable wall of protection within minutes. With options reaching 20”, 30”, or 40”, it adapts to different flood levels and offers reliable protection where it’s needed most. Systems like this matter because they reduce damage before it happens. In an era where climate risks can’t be ignored, barriers like Mayim L-shaped barriers help safeguard what recovery alone cannot. If flood walls can be built to rise with the waters, what other parts of our environment will need to be redesigned for survival in the decades ahead?
