This goes well beyond business. A lack of transparency kills accountability in all aspects of life. Nothing good grows in the dark, just like nothing good happens after midnight (I'd say 10pm, but that's just me). I would add that we all need close confidants and wise counsel that we can be fully transparent with in order to keep us accountable. For personal matters, this is likely a spouse or best friend. Professionally, this can't be the masses - it needs to be someone (or a couple someones) at an appropriate level for you to be transparent with and who can be the trusted counselors you need to give unbiased and critical feedback without fear of reprisal (either direction).
