On October 1st I’ll be joining Canada’s newly formed AI Task Force. The objective is to deliver a set of clear recommendations that will shape the nation's strategy on AI. To develop, deploy, commercialize and secure. My focus will be on ensuring Canada is prepared for the opportunities AI brings to our defence and security landscape. That includes strengthening our ability to detect and respond to crisis events, protecting critical infrastructure from emerging threats, and crucially building trust in the systems that Canadians rely on every day. Canada has long played an important role in building the global AI ecosystem. From Geoffrey Hinton who pioneered deep learning backpropagation and neural nets at the University of Toronto, Yoshua Bengio how advanced generative models and neural architectures at Université de Montréal, to Edmonton’s very own, 2024 Turing Award winner, Richard Sutton for his work reinforcement learning at Amii (Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute). Canada’s foundational research in deep learning and reinforcement learning strengthens not only our innovation economy but also the capabilities of our allies. But the work is never done. Today more than ever we need to clearly define our strategy and approach to the most transformative technology of our generation. We need to set ambitious goals, clear objectives and supportive frameworks to build the future we want to see. To that end.
