Construction projects come with their share of hidden challenges - especially below the surface. Understanding subsurface conditions early can save lenders time, money, and major headaches down the line. At the Construction Lender Round Table (CLRM), Matthew Marcus, GE, PE, PG, MCE, Managing Director at Partner Engineering and Science, Inc., shared practical tips to help lenders spot red flags and reduce geotechnical risk. From knowing when a geotechnical report is essential, to recognizing warning signs like foundation issues or cracking, Matthew breaks down what to look for and why it matters. Geotechnical engineering plays a vital role in identifying and resolving structural challenges caused by soil conditions. In my interview with Matthew Marcus, GE, PE, PG, MCE, he shared practical, easy-to-understand insights that help non-engineers grasp the risks involved in real estate investments. When it comes to the ongoing tension between man and nature, science and engineering are indispensable allies—some issues, after all, can turn into a money pit. If you're ever uncertain, consulting a geotechnical expert can save you significant time and trouble when making critical decisions. #geotechnical #partneresi #structural issues #soils #constructionlenders #CRE #realestatedevelopment

It has been 10 years since the opening of the Constitution of 1812 Bridge in Cádiz, an iconic project executed by Dragados SA that transformed the city’s mobility and its connection with the rest of Andalusia. Did you know that its 3,092 meters in length make it the longest bridge in Spain and one of Europe’s most distinctive? Its cable-stayed span, with 540 meters between pylons, ranks as the third longest in Europe. And with a clearance of 69 meters, it is the second highest bridge over the sea in the world, surpassing even San Francisco’s Golden Gate. Beyond its technical milestones, its impact on mobility has been decisive: improving access to the city, diverting heavy traffic away from the urban center, and strengthening connections with Puerto Real, the Autovía del Sur (A-4), and the rest of Andalusia. This monumental infrastructure not only solved Cádiz’s complex access challenges, but also symbolizes ACS Group’s ability to take on the greatest technical challenges and turn them into international benchmarks. Ten years on, the Constitution of 1812 Bridge remains a source of pride for Spanish engineering and a symbol of what it means to connect territories, drive development, and build the future. Boring sewage tunnels – far from boring! The sewer network in the region around Malmö in Sweden is going to be upgraded as part of the new MAXIMA sewage system by VA SYD. A whopping 16 kilometres of modern sewage tunnels will be bored 25 metres below ground and it’s COWI's job to plan the construction. “The project secures vital infrastructure for the municipalities of Burlöv, Lomma, Malmö and Lund for decades to come, and we won this project thanks to our tunnelling expertise in both Sweden and Denmark”, says Susanna Ohlin, Senior Vice President Infrastructure at COWI in Sweden. And this is not our first rodeo – we have roped in a fair number of complex tunnels in the region before: The West Link in Gothenburg, the Copenhagen Metro and the Malmö city tunnel are recent examples. COWI's services will mainly include geotechnics, geotechnical structures, and planning for tunnel drilling using the tunnel boring machine (TBM) method. The planning documentation will be delivered in the second half of 2026.
