Swiss marine power company WinGD Ltd. will offer the first ethanol-fuelled two-stroke marine engine next year, with deliveries for newbuild and retrofit applications set to begin in 2027. 

WinGD Ltd. is pleased to announce that it will be ready to take commercial orders for its next-generation two-stroke ethanol-fueled propulsion engines from 2026. The diesel-cycle concept will feature an adapted control system and fuel injector nozzle arrangement to account for the higher energy density of ethanol and the consequently lower fuel volumes required

Yanmar has launched a new company, Yanmar Power Solutions, focused on medium- and high-speed marine engines. The move reflects the leading four-stroke marine engine manufacturer’s drive to expand its propulsion and power generation business.   At the press conference, Yanmar Power Solutions President Masaru Hirose said the company will promote multi-fuel technologies for marine propulsion and auxiliary applications, developing engines for methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen to meet diverse market needs.   The company targets 9,900 engines in FY2030, up 20% from FY2025, underscoring its ambition to lead the maritime energy transition. The global shift toward alternative fuels: numbers tell the real story We often hear about the maritime industry’s move toward cleaner fuels and this time, the numbers genuinely show it’s happening. According to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (August 2025), around 1,794 vessels are already operating on alternative fuels, and another 1,544 are on order. Together, they make up roughly 6% of the large ocean trading fleet, a big step forward for an industry that was almost fully conventional a decade ago. (Source: DNV AFI 2025) LNG still leads with more than half the share, methanol is rising fast, and ammonia and hydrogen are starting to appear in early stage projects. What’s equally important is the parallel progress in bunkering infrastructure. Nearly 200 ports worldwide now offer LNG bunkering, and the first methanol and ammonia supply chains are starting to take shape. It’s not yet global coverage but it’s a strong foundation that gives shipowners confidence to invest. At Dugri Dock, we’re closely connected to this change. PowerCell Group has secured the contract to supply the fuel cell systems for two hydrogen-powered bulk carriers to be built by GMI Rederi AS. The contract, valued at just over SEK 40 million, includes 14 Marine System 225 units, providing +3 MW of power, as well as engineering services. Deliveries are scheduled for 2026 – 2027. This order continues the strong momentum of the Marine System 225, now being deployed across an even wider range of applications in the maritime sector. With bulk carriers added to the portfolio, the system is demonstrating its flexibility and competitiveness for demanding use cases across shipping. Each of the two vessels will be fitted with seven Marine System 225 units, enabling them to operate entirely without emissions by replacing fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen. At 85 meters long with a deadweight capacity of 4,000 tons, the vessels will be the first hydrogen-powered bulk carriers in the world when launched in early 2027. GMI Rederi is developing the vessels, while the engineering, integration and certification process for the hydrogen system will be handled by eCap Marine, a German ship integrator specialising in green propulsion solutions. The project has received support from the Norwegian government’s Enova fund and the NOx Fund, and is part of the Green Shipping Programme, a public–private collaboration aimed at accelerating green maritime innovation. Stig Kallestad, Marine Director at PowerCell Group, said: "This project shows just how far the Marine System 225 has come in proving itself as a reliable and competitive solution across shipping segments. Bulk carriers are demanding applications, and the fact that our technology is chosen here demonstrates that hydrogen fuel cells are no longer just pilots, they are real solutions for real operations." Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell Group, added: "We continue to expand the use of our Marine System 225, and with GMI Rederi we are now moving into bulk carriers, a new and important segment in shipping. Regulatory frameworks such as ETS trading and IMO requirements are pushing the break-even point in favour of hydrogen fuel cells, making them a competitive and future-ready choice for operators. This is not only about two ships; it is about setting a new standard for zero-emission maritime transport." The HyTANKa was launched only in June, as a unique autonomous mobile hydrogen refuelling bowser solution, capable of directly refuelling hydrogen-powered construction machinery on-site at up to 350bar. HyTANKa represents an important opportunity for operators of construction machinery and equipment to support the move to net zero by enabling hydrogen fuel to be moved around in quantities suitable for real-world hydrogen refuelling. HyTANKa provides a practical mechanism for bringing hydrogen into the construction sector, one of the hardest to decarbonize parts of our energy system. Olivier Bontems
