Student housing: more than just a place to sleep. University residences represent a great opportunity for real estate, but reducing them to square meters or financial returns means missing their true essence. Student housing is about life and connection, spaces that create value for people and for the city. Last week, we discussed this during il Quotidiano Immobiliare’s live session with Federico Galardi, our General Manager Italy. Joivy manages several structures across Italy, and over the years, we’ve worked to create environments that meet students’ real needs: open common areas, shared experiences, and an internal tutor program that helps build a vibrant, inclusive, and engaged community. If you’d like to learn more, you can watch the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/dj_yivdA or join us tomorrow, October 9, for a deep dive into our Joivy Campus Udine together with Pietro Vono, our Head of Operations. https://lnkd.in/duhG53gZ. #enjoyliving

Public space works best when it belongs to everyone. 🤝 Common spaces are the city’s shared living rooms, the streets, small parks, waterfront edges, and in-between places where daily life happens. They are bottom-up places, shaped by everyday users through co-creation, self-organization, and local stewardship. When design and governance enable this energy, common spaces foster co-presence, informal care, collective efficacy, and a grounded sense of safety. That is why we bring students into these places. Future city makers need clear, evidence-based methods to read spaces, test light-touch interventions, and evaluate what improves liveability, inclusion, and safety. Today, students from Norway, Portugal, and Italy – participating in the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme Urban Transformation and Public Safety (BIP) - explored Rotterdam’s Hefpark. In mixed international teams, they carried out place-reading walks, mapped uses, edges, and sightlines, and shared a structured on-site lunch to exchange perspectives. The result was mutual understanding and a sense of shared ownership, the very conditions that sustain bottom-up CPTED outcomes such as natural surveillance, positive territoriality, and everyday stewardship. #UrbanTransformation #PublicSafety #SpatialAnalysis #ErasmusPlus #Rotterdam Inholland University of Applied Sciences Universidade do Porto Università di Pisa Western Norway University of Applied Sciences Gemeente Rotterdam

Colliers: Hong Kong is well-positioned to become a global education destination for high-calibre talent, building on its strong academic foundation with five of the world’s top 100 universities. However, to realise its full potential, the city must address the shortage of supply of residential facilities, which has not kept pace with rising demand. This gap is projected to widen significantly, with demand expected to reach 172,200 beds by 2028, resulting in a shortfall of approximately 120,000 beds. Investors can capitalise on this unmet demand by developing or converting properties into student housing through the Hostels in the City scheme. Hong Kong’s growing non-local student base and policy support for student hostel development make this a timely opportunity. "Colliers' insights helped shape the Hostels in the City Scheme by aligning market realities with planning feasibility. We encourage investors to leverage this scheme and engage early with consultants to identify properties with favourable zoning, lease conditions and feasible floorplate." - Jason Kwong, Head of Land Consultancy, Colliers Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gXkQMCi6 #QIP #HK #pbsa #realestate #privateequity #livingsector #alternativeinvestments

New Developments Include: 🔹 The Mile, Lisbon – A €35M, 333-bed residence in one of Europe’s most undersupplied PBSA markets, offering premium amenities like a pool, gym, and media rooms. 🔹 Ropemaker Court, Manchester – A 416-bed asset acquired by BauMont Real Estate Capital Limited (backed by M&G), set for phased refurbishment to enhance energy and operational performance. 🔹 Fabric, Nottingham – A £48M, 323-bed development now welcoming students, featuring en-suite clusters, studios, and wellness-focused amenities. Martin Towns, Global Head of M&G Real Estate, says “The student accommodation sector offers unmatched potential for stable, long-term returns and portfolio diversification. I was working on writing an article today when I came across this quote from Loris Malaguzzi: "For me personally the great problem today is…how to move towards a form of renewal that attempts to interweave the single disciplines and make them interact in a way that has never been done before in learning. We are proposing something in very uncertain terms, which does not envisage abandoning specific disciplines but at the same time does not want to exalt them; something that would like to have the disciplines penetrating each other and reciprocally enriching each other." (Cagliari et al., 2016, p.264) Malaguzzi isn't asking us to throw out our disciplines, but to end the "exaltation" of silos. He calls for disciplines to "penetrate each other" and become mutually enriching. This is not about being interdisciplinary in name only; it's about a deep reciprocal enrichment. This vision perfectly encapsulates why cross-faculty projects rooted in rigorous educational research, are essential. They don't just solve problems; they redefine what a university can be by creating a shared space where the lines blur and innovation flourishes. The administrative structures and academic metrics of our institutions often reward specialization and separation. How can we, as leaders, academics, and industry partners, build systems that actively incentivize this crucial act of interweaving? Early start yesterday as I travelled to Taunton to attend the inaugural South West Property Forum, hosted by The Property Forum. The expert panel explored opportunities and challenges in the region: Martin Bellamy from Salamanca Group highlighted how Gravity - Smart Campus will not only create 8,000 direct jobs but should also act as a flywheel for innovation and investment in Somerset, helping to redefine the region while building on its existing strengths....could Somerset become the UK’s Silicon Valley? Leader of Somerset Council, Bill Nevans, discussed talent retention challenges due to the region’s age demographics, emphasising the importance of investing in education and apprenticeships, and updated us on progress forming a unitary authority. Simon Prescott of tor&co highlighted planning process challenges, including nutrient neutrality requirements, which present hurdles for the area and the ever present need for more investment into the planning process and staffing shortages. Of course, no discussion could ignore the rise of AI. Representatives of the event sponsors Will Pink from Landstack, Tom Lee from Pure Structured Finance, and Peter Swinburn from Clarke Willmott, completed the panel and, shared insights on AI and its integration into the property industry, alongside contributing to wider discussions on the region’s opportunities and challenges. The key takeaway? Somerset is open for business and there are incredible opportunities for anyone ready to invest in this dynamic region. Thank you to David Jones RTPI RICS from Evans Jones for hosting the event. #FutureOfSomerset #Opportunity #Investment #Gravity
