There’s still a long road ahead to ensure broader patient access, but today marks an important milestone. As a Spanish citizen, I’m glad to see this progress (not quite a victory, but a meaningful step forward) made possible by years of work from advocates like Carola Pérez. Alongside France (if they can ever form a stable government) and Türkiye, the dominoes continue to fall.........
A small but meaningful step forward for patients in Spain 🇪🇸 Today, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved a long-awaited Royal Decree regulating the medicinal use of cannabis in standardised preparations. It’s encouraging to see progress toward a framework that recognises the therapeutic potential of cannabis when other medicines have been insufficient— and to see an emphasis on evidence-based prescribing and pharmaceutical quality. However, while this marks a positive shift, access remains highly limited: prescriptions can only be made by hospital-based specialists, and products must be prepared and dispensed exclusively in hospital pharmacies. We hope to see future evolutions of the current regulatory framework, where patient access to medical cannabis is eased and additional pharmaceutical forms are incorporated into the pool of available therapeutic tools for doctors.
