Different industries have different cultures. That impacts everything they do including AI governance. Most of the focus on responsible AI has centered on tech companies, but the reality is that even enterprises in "traditional" industrial sectors are now investing heavily in AI. On this week's episode of The Road to Accountable AI, I spoke with Uthman Ali, BP’s first Global Responsible AI Officer, as (to his knowledge!) the first person to occupy such a role for a major energy company -- though certainly not the last. We discuss how a company that has to focus actively on safety because of its business operations thinks about responsible AI. Uthman explains how embedding ethics into engineering workflows and aligning innovation with safety standards are part of BP's efforts, as well as discussing how enterprises can get responsible AI programs off the ground and implement effective AI ethics boards. We also dive into his personal journey from law and human rights to AI ethics, and why now is a critical window for AI governance.
