Take our #AllergyQuiz Asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), and atopic dermatitis (AD) are among the most common chronic diseases in children, significantly affecting quality of life, school performance, and healthcare systems worldwide. These diseases are known to be driven by environmental exposures, including viral respiratory infections and helminth infestations. The systematic review published by Agache et al., supports the EAACI Guidelines on Environmental Science for Allergic Diseases and Asthma by critically evaluating the evidence on how infections with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus (RV), and helminths influence the risk of developing allergic conditions such as #asthma, AR, and AD. The impact of Trichuris trichiura infection during infancy was assessed in relation to asthma development. What conclusion did the authors draw? Check the correct answer by reading the original article by Agache and colleagues: doi.org/10.1111/all.16611 Options: A) Significantly increased asthma risk B) Uncertain effect on asthma development C) Slightly increased asthma risk D) Strong protective effect #Allergy_journal Share your answer in the comment section below. We will post the answer tomorrow. https://lnkd.in/dpkNwmUZ

The human lungs are essential respiratory organs responsible for facilitating gas exchange, which is crucial for maintaining the body’s metabolism. Located within the thoracic cavity, the lungs are composed of spongy tissue that allows for the expansion and contraction necessary for breathing. The structure of the human lungs consists of Lobes, Bronchi and Bronchioles, Alveoli, Pleura e.t.c. The Lungs are largely responsible for gas exchange, airway defence and regulations of body PH. The right lung has three lobes (upper, middle, and lower), while the left lung has two lobes (upper and lower). The left lung is smaller due to the positioning of the heart. The trachea (windpipe) branches into two primary bronchi (one for each lung), which further divide into smaller bronchi and ultimately into bronchioles that end in alveoli. The alveolar are tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs and are surrounded by a network of capillaries that facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. A double-layered membrane (visceral and parietal pleura) that envelops each lung and allows lubricated movement during respiration. The Lungs diffuse oxygen from inhaled air through alveolar walls into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. The respiratory system is equipped with mucus and cilia to trap and expel pathogens and particulate matter from the air. Through the exchange of gases, the lungs help regulate the acid-base balance in the blood. Various tests are performed to evaluate lung function, diagnose respiratory conditions, and monitor disease progression. Pulmonary Function test (e.g spirometry, lung volume measurements, diffusion capacity ), pulse oximetry, CPET can be carried out on the lungs. Bronchoscopy, CT scans and MRI scans are imaging tests that can be carried out on the lungs. Blood tests such as material blood gas (ABG), complete blood count (CBC), allergy test and sputum test can also be carried out on the lungs. Conclusively, the lungs play a vital role in respiratory and overall health, and various tests are employed to assess their function and diagnose potential diseases. Understanding these tests can be valuable for managing respiratory conditions effectively and ensuring optimal lung health. #worldlungsdaySept25 #lungfunction #respiratoryhealth #respiratorycare

Not all childhood asthma is the same—and understanding why could change how we prevent it. A new Thorax study (October 2025) explores how atopic (allergic) and non-atopic asthma in children relate to environmental and lifestyle factors. Researchers analyzed data from diverse populations and found that while allergic sensitization significantly raises asthma risk, both forms of the disease often share common exposures, including air pollution, early-life infections, and housing conditions. These overlapping pathways suggest that environmental stressors, not just allergic triggers, shape asthma risk across subtypes. The findings emphasize the need for tailored prevention and management strategies that reflect the complex and multifactorial origins of childhood asthma rather than a single “one-size-fits-all” model. PHAEUROPE joins the Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP) in marking the World Chronic Cough Day 🌍 🗣 on 15 October. Chronic cough is more than just a symptom - it is recognized as a disease in its own right, affecting quality of life, sleep, and daily functioning. In adults, it is defined as a cough lasting eight weeks or longer, often persistent and disruptive. For people with pulmonary hypertension (PH), chronic cough can be a significant and sometimes overlooked issue. It is typically dry, but may occasionally produce blood, and often occurs alongside shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, or swelling in the legs and ankles. In PH, chronic cough can result from right-sided heart failure, where fluid builds up in the lungs, or from underlying lung conditions such as COPD or interstitial lung disease. By raising awareness of chronic cough, PHAEUROPE aims to highlight its impact on PH patients and the importance of early recognition and proper management, helping both patients and healthcare professionals understand when a cough signals a serious underlying condition. Helping the NHS Manage Winter Pressures with Faster Respiratory Diagnostics Every winter, the NHS faces the perfect storm: rising admissions with respiratory illness, bed capacity stretched, and pressure on staff. Respiratory tract infections like Flu, RSV and COVID-19 don’t just affect patients, they impact bed flow, PPE usage, and staff sickness too. Copan’s recent article on advances in respiratory diagnostics highlights how faster, multiplex testing and quality sampling are transforming care. The message is clear: speed and accuracy are no longer optional - they’re essential. That’s why we’re supporting NHS hospitals with a connected lateral flow test for COVID, RSV and Flu. It’s already proving its value in: • Rapid triage of respiratory patients in A&E and admissions units • Reducing unnecessary isolation and protecting precious side rooms • Smarter use of PPE - keeping staff safe while reducing waste • Minimising staff sickness by identifying infectious patients earlier And because every diagnostic result is only as good as the sample, we’re proud to be authorised distributors of Copan swabs, ensuring accurate, reliable sampling for both rapid and molecular testing. With the right tools, we can help NHS teams work more effectively, protect staff, and improve patient flow at a time when it matters most. #NHS #WinterPressures #Diagnostics #RespiratoryCare #PatientFlow #InfectionControl #Copan http://bit.ly/4h33Lky
